Returning champ?
College team, advisor hope to repeat
wins in ice carving competitions
Mother Nature may be responsible for the ice carving
champions at thePlymouth IceFestival this year.
Returning champion Jeff Lao, an adjunct professor in the
culinary program at Henry Ford Community College, said
this year the warmer temperatures will be a serious factor
in the carvings.
“I think it will depend on who understands the ice and
knows how toworkwith it inwarmerweather,” Lao said.
Lao serves as the advisor to the Ice Carving Club at
Henry Ford and the team swept the individual competition
last year. Steve McCormick took first place honors with his
ice sculpture of a dragonfly and club president Robert
Speeks won second place with his ice sculpture of a turtle
dove. Club member Mark Tapakes won third place with his
creation of a rat king, wearing a crown andholding a scepter
ladenwitha piece of cheese.
