The official opening ceremony for
the 34th Annual Plymouth Ice Festival
will take place inKellogg Park at 7 p.m.
Friday, Jan. 8 when members of the
city commission will be in attendance
to cut the ribbon welcoming visitors to
the event that annually draws national
attention.
The lights in the Ice Garden in
Kellogg Park will be turned on for the
first time, bathing the ice sculptures in
the park with color. The lighting is
sponsored byDFCUFinancial andwill
continue each night through the festi-
val weekend exhibit.
A new event this year sponsored by
Kroger is the Ice Festival Playground,
full of interactive ice carvings for chil-
dren to enjoy. Festival organizers said
there would be plenty of photo oppor-
tunities for parents at this “really cool”
playground.
The exciting and nerve testing
Dueling Chainsaw competition will
take place this year at 7 p.m. on
Saturday. Competitors are given a
block of ice and 15 minutes to create
an ice carving judged to be the best.
Chain saws roar, ice chips fly and spec-
tators gape in amazement every year at
this event noted James Geitzen, festival
director.

brandishing chain saws, attacking ice

The Plymouth Community United
Way will be sponsoring a Winter
Clothing Drive during the festival this
year and hope to set a record for the
largest amount of winter wear collect-
edduring oneweekend.
The organization hopes to fill the
bed of a pickup truck, the use of which
was donated by Blackwell Ford, with
new or handmade hats, gloves and
scarves. The cold-weather wear will be
donated to agencies serving the home-
