the
Northville
Community
Foundation to consider assuming
responsibility for the operation of
Maybury Farm which the state had
closed in a move to divest itself of all
activities other thanparks.
As negotiations for the transfer con-
tinued, a mid-February fire of unde-
termined origin destroyed the barns
and livestock at the farm, which was
still under the direction and control of
the DNR. Adding to the loss, the state
was self-insured so there was no fund-
ing to rebuild. Shari Peters, the direc-
tor of the foundation at the time, and
the members of the board of directors
knew that the task to rebuildwould be
enormous but made the decision to
move forward and take over the farm.
