“I knew that Ann Arbor had a guild,
that Jackson had a guild, so I thought
Plymouth needed one,” she said. She
met with a few friends in 1994 to begin
the Village Potters Guild. By 1995, they
had decided on their name. That year,
four or five of them showed their work at
Art In The Park for the first time, setting
up inKelloggPark around the fountain.
This year, more than 22 artist mem-
bers of the guildwill be showing and sell-
ing their work during Art In The Park.
They will be exhibiting bowls, sculpture,
and Majolica pottery, a form of antique
tin glazing first seen in England cen-
turies ago.

Art In The Park show Beth Hazen will
have her highly prized animal sculptures
at the booth this year, works that are
exceptionally popularwith collectors.
Today, there are more than 32 artist
members of the Village Potters Guild
who meet and work at the studio located
behind the old Daisy Rifle factory at 326
NorthMainSt. inPlymouth.
The members now offer classes in
various disciplines of ceramic art, mostly
for adults, but occasionally do a special
workshop for younger artisans. The
workshops are open to the public, Darby
said, and the members are excited about
a Raku workshop planned for this
September.
“Raku is an ancient Japanese form of
glazing,” Darby said. “We will have
already prepared bowls or vases and
people will able to glaze the pieces as
they choose and then have them fired
immediately. In about 3 hours, they can
take theirwork home,” she said.
The guild has several kilns of various
sizes on site. The Raku firings will be
done in an outside kiln, Darby said.
The Village Potters Guild booth has
been located at the same area of Art In
The Park for many years, Darby said.
They can be found on Forest Street right
at the corner of AnnArbor Trail.
“We offer a smorgasbord of ceramic
work,”Darby said.
