Training sessions
Five Sumpter Township police officers were among the latest participants in the Louisiana State University National Center for Biomedical Research and Training Academy
of Counter Terrorist Education. To date, 11 Sumpter officers have completed both class sessions and the remainder of the township officers will attend the course later this
year, officials said. The first class, Law Enforcement Active Shooter Emergency Response, took place in January and 27 officers from local communities participated in an
effort to improve their knowledge, skills, and abilities to rapidly deploy and neutralize violent offenders during active shooter situations or mass casualty incidents to prevent
the loss of lives. The second class, Active Threat Integrated Response, took place last month when 34 police, fire, and EMS officers, including four firefighters and five police
officers from Sumpter, come together to train in improving integration between law enforcement, fire, and emergency medical services (EMS) in active shooter events.
Added sessions are expected to be scheduled later this year, officials said, to ensure all Sumpter Township emergency personnel experience the advanced training.
