I think that is the single most appeal-
ing quality about this event. People are
friendly and smiling and happy and
there is just a unique atmosphere,” he
said.
People shouldn't forget the econom-
ic impact this event has on the busi-
nesses and merchants, Geitzen said. It
was originally conceived more than 34
years ago as a way to lure people out
into the cold weather to downtown to
visit the restaurants and shops in an
effort to boost business in the commu-
nity.
“It does that, for sure,” Geitzen said,
“but the impact on our local charities
is sometimes overlooked. The festival
is almost completely free, but our local
charities like the Kiwanis, Rotary,
Special Olympics and so many others,
really benefit from the parking fees.
This event is another big fundraiser
for these groups that do so much good
in the community.”
Geitzen also said that many people
don't realize that The Party Tent
behind E.G. Nick's is one of the major
fundraisers for the local Vietnam vet-
erans' groups.
“That $3 cover charge goes right to
the veterans. It's a great time and it is
another event that really gives back to
the community.”
The 35th Annual Plymouth Ice
Festival will take place Jan. 6-8
throughout downtown Plymouth. The
event is sponsored by Ford Motor Co.,
Genysis Credit Union, Blue Care
Network, Fox 2 News and 93.9 The
River.
