Bake sale founder remembered by police
Dorothy Gardner still had a seat wait-
ing for her. The late Inkster resident was
honored by the members of the Inkster
Police Department and Commission on
Aging at their most recent quarterly bake
sale in November.
The event was created by Mrs. Gardner
around two years ago to support commu-
nity outreach for the police department
and commission on aging.
Mrs. Gardner was a dedicated public
servant, serving as an auxiliary police
officer in the city. She was actively
involved in her community, dedicating
time to raise money for the city and serv-
ing on the commission on aging.
Following her death, the Inkster Police
Department dedicated the bake sale to
Mrs. Gardner, naming it the Dorothy
Gardner Memorial Bake Sale. Her event
carries on as a way to support increased
community relations efforts by the depart-
ment.
This quarter, all items were $1, and the free movie nights and Coffee with a Cop
bake sale sold more than 100 various events. The funds also support the depart-
baked goods. All proceeds from the sale ment efforts to provide basketballs, jump
will support concession equipment for ropes and chalk for children in the city.
Now open
The I-94 pedestrian bridge, the newest community project of the Van Buren
Township Downtown Development Authority (DDA), has been completed and is
open for use. Continued improvement of pedestrian and bicycle access to the
business district is a priority of the Van Buren Township DDA, a spokesman
explained. Located along the east side of Belleville Road, the new pedestrian
overpass will improve connectivity between the north and south sides of the busi-
ness district by providing Van Buren Township residents and visitors with a reli-
able and safe way to navigate over I-94 by foot or bicycle, connecting residential
neighborhoods with the downtown area. Working in conjunction with the
Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT), the Van Buren Township DDA
was able to secure nearly $500,000 through TAP grant funding to aide in the cost
of construction. Landscaping and minor details will be completed during spring
2019, according to a statement from the township. For more information on the
