used to meet both the present and
future needs of the community. The
earnings from these funds, which are
designated for a variety of purposes,
are used to annually award grants to
worthy nonprofit organizations and
community programs. As the funds
grow, or new funds are established,
the
Northville
Community
Foundation has the ability to award
grants in larger sums and tomore pro-
grams each year.
In 2016, theNCF awarded grants to
12 organizations including: Beyond
Belief Senior Theater and Chorus,
Friends of Maybury State Park,
Friends of the Northville Art House,
New Hope Center for Grief Support,
Northville High School Symphonic
Band, Northville Historical Society,
Northville Senior Adult Services,
Northville
Township
Police
Department's D.A.R.E. Program,
Northville Youth Assistance, Tipping
Point Theatre, Thornton Creek
Elementary School PTA, and Special
Ministries of Livingston County
(donated through a Donor Advised
Fund). Through July 31, the NCF is
accepting applications for the 2017
grant cycle, which will be awarded
this fall.
As NCF steadily grew in presence
in the Northville community, so did
the desire to increase their impact as
opportunities presented themselves.
In the fall of 2003, that motivated the
NCF to reach an agreement with the
State of Michigan to assume opera-
tions of Maybury Farm. This was no
small task as a fire in early 2003 had
caused loss of the main barns and
most of the animals. However, NCF
saw this as a unique opportunity to
use their established presence to
unite the community in raising funds
and support to rebuild and reopen the
farm. Through the generosity of hun-
dreds of volunteers and dozens of
local businesses, the NCF was able to
accomplish its goal and Maybury
Farm was reopened to the public in
September of 2005.
Since that time, Maybury Farm has
seen tens of thousands of visitors from
throughout Southeast Michigan and
beyond. The mission of the farm is to
connect children and families to ani-
mals, agriculture and native Michigan
habitats. Maybury Farm houses more
