The purchase of a new aerial
ladder truck for the Westland
Fire Department was good news
forFireChiefMichael Stradtner.
“With the recent approval of a
new 75-foot ladder truck, our
firefighters are better able to
serve our community, with aerial
devices located in the north and
south ends of our city,” comment-
ed Stradtner. “This ladder will
have a greater reach and ability
than the current unit it is replac-
ing.”
Members of the Westland City
Council approved the purchase
of the new EONE fire truck with
a 75-foot aerial ladder in the
amount of $791,893, at a meeting
earlier thismonth. The purchase
will be financed through the city
Capital Improvement Fund.
The new truck will replace
Engine 1 which is a 2002 ladder
truck with more than 11,550
hours of service, Stradtner said.
The new truck offers a 2000
gallon perminute pump and car-
ries 500 gallons of water on
board to provide for a quick fire
attack as additional water sup-
plies are being connected, offi-
cials noted. The new design
allows for multiple lines to be
deployed in conjunctionwith the
use of the aerial device for fire
extinguishment. The truck is
also equipped with three pre-
connected attack lines for rapid
deployment and fire extinguish-
ment in addition to various sized
ground ladders to access win-
dows and roofs. The unit being
replaced had limited reach and
ability and the new truck will
provide greater coverage of high
rise buildings, the chief
explained.
“The approval of this pur-
chase comes on the heels of the
purchase of two new Emergency
Medical Service vehicles,” com-
mented Mayor William R. Wild.
“The City of Westland under-
stands the importance of provid-
ing our firefighters with the tools
necessary to provide for the safe-
ty needs of the community and
this new purchase is one more
example of that commitment.”
