Anew sports complex in theNorwayne
area of Westland is $100,000 closer to real-
ity, thanks to a grant from the State of
Michigan.
The city received a state grant for
recreational improvements in that
amount last week presented to Mayor
William Wild by State Rep. Robert
Kosowski during a regular meeting of the
city council.
The project will begin in October, offi-
cials said, andwill include amenities such
as fields, bleachers and possibly awalking
path and playground equipment. This
grant was made possible by the support of
Kosowski, Speaker of the House Kevin
Cotter, Chair of the House Appropriations
Committee Al Pscholka and Minority Vice
ChairHarvey Santana, according toWild.
The new recreation area has been
named Lincoln Field after the former ele-
mentary school which was located at the
site. Westland will lease the property,
located on Grand Traverse next to Cayley
Park, from the Wayne-Westland
Community School District for $1.
“The Wayne-Westland Community
School District has a great working rela-
tionship with the City of Westland,” com-
mented Assistant Superintendent John
Albrecht. “We are excited to see the
development of new amenities in this
area.”
“This is the secondmajor grant the City
of Westland has received for recreational
improvements to the Norwayne area,”
commented Wild. “None of this would be
possible without the wonderful support
we have received from State
Representative Robert Kosowski and his
colleagues at the state level as well as the
Wayne-Westland Community School
District. The children of the Norwayne
community will greatly benefit from these
recreational enhancements by having
more resources and places to go to engage
inhealthy and active lifestyles”
In April, the City of Westland received
a $175,000 grant which funded improve-
ments on the Jefferson Barns Community
Vitality Center which is also located in the
historic Norwayne community. Those
funds will go to the addition of a baseball
diamond complex, basketball court, pic-
nic shelter. playground equipment and
improvements to the parking lot.
an extremely difficult job and they han-
dled it well,” he said. “They are each a
tremendous asset to the foundation and
the community.”
Shaw said that Wayne County
Community College District and
Schoolcraft College each offered scholar-
ships for deserving students through the
programthis year.
“These colleges are truly examples of
what it means to educate young people.
They do so much more than offer classes.
They teach and lead by example, showing
us, and the students, their dedication to
improving the entire community with
their involvement and dedication. The
entire community is grateful to these col-
leges for their genuine efforts to improve
young lives,” Shawsaid.
The Commission on Aging and Wayne
Senior Services Office are once again
looking for help in finding the Diamond
of theCommunity.
This program recognizes a Wayne res-
ident, 70 or older, who still continues to
volunteer in helping makeWayne a great
community in which to live. Nomination
forms are available at Wayne City Hall,
Wayne Library and Wayne Senior
Services/HYPE Recreation Center. They
must be completed and returned to the
Senior Services Office by Thursday, Aug.
4.
The resident selected as the Diamond
of the Community will be the guest of
honor at a dinner Sept. 20, receive $75, a
beautiful plaque and be presented with
an official resolution from the city
acknowledging their contributions.
The award program will be spon-
sored, again this year by Wayne Dairy
Queen.
Information regarding the presenta-
tion dinner and tickets will be released
following the selection of theDiamond of
theCommunity recipient for this year.
