“Each year the American Hiking

Canton Special Events Coordinator.
“Canton's trail system is the perfect place
to celebrate trails, and hopefully be
inspired to hike, run, or casually take in
the beauty of naturemore often.”
Additional trails within this Canton
trail system include: the Fellows Creek
Wetland Nature Trail at Flodin Park,
which runs one-third of a mile in length;
Canton's ITC Corridor Trail, with its trail-
head located at Flodin Park; and the
Lower Rouge Trail, which interconnects
Canton's Heritage Park with the Michigan
Department of Transportation's I-275
Metro Trail (a regional trail system offer-
ing approximately 6 miles of non-motor-
ized pathways in Canton). The trailhead
for the Lower Rouge Trail is located off of
Morton-Taylor Road, north of Michigan
Avenue. Combined, all of these trails in
Canton offer nearly 15 miles of non-motor-
ized pathways, open year-round from 6

Van Buren Township officials
have accepted $30,000 in grant
funds to help facilitate the route
for the Iron Belle hiking and bik-
ing trail which travels from Belle
Isle to theUpper Peninsula.
Trail riders will travel through
the township between Lower
HuronMetro Park andEdgemont
Street inBelleville.
Township trustees approved
the acceptance of the grant fund-
ing by a 6-1 vote at their regular
meeting earlier this month.
Funding will come from the
Michigan Department of Natural
Resources and will be paid to
PEA Inc., a contractor hired by
the state, to determine and
secure the precise route of the
trail. The township will now be
required to pay $10,000 in match-
ing funds toward the completion
of the 2.5 mile project. The new
section of trail will join existing
portions in Belleville and
Ypsilanti. The route is tentative-
ly planned to start at Lower
Huron Metro Park and follow
East Huron River Drive, Edison
Lake Road and Haggerty Road.
Planners anticipate the necessity
for easements across five parcels
of private property.
The planned trail will be pave-
ment, 10 feet wide with 2 feet on
each side for proper drainage
and is expected to be used by bik-
ers, hikers andwalkers.
Van
Buren
Township
Supervisor Kevin McNamara
told the board that this was a
project for which township offi-
cials had lobbied and that there
was some immediacy to accept-
ing the funding in light of Gov.
Rick Snyder's leaving office next
year.
“We want to have the west link
set up before he leaves,”
McNamara said.
Trustee Sherry Frazier cast
the no vote on the project noting
her concern that the township
may not have the funding to com-
plete the trail.
“This is worrisome to me,”
Frazier said. “Hopefully, home-
owners won't mind having a trail
in front of their homes.”
“I'm not confident we'll get
more money after Gov. Snyder
leaves,” McNamara said, estimat-
ing it would take two to three
years for the trail to be complet-
ed.
Hopefully, homeowners
won't mind having a trail
in front of their homes.
