RECOGNI-
TION: R-1 Swearing In and Badge Presentation – New Public Safety Director, Joshua Meier
Clerk Bennett Swore in Joshua
Meier as Public Safety Director. Ms. McLaughlin read the following statement: Joshua Meier is being promoted to the position
of Public Safety Director, following a competitive internal process. Josh is a true Canton success story—volunteering as a Canton
Police Explorer during his high school years, he later hired on to the department as a Public Safety Service Officer. Josh worked
his way up through the Fire Department as a Firefighter/Paramedic, Deputy Chief, and Fire Chief. Josh is Canton’s first Public
Safety Director to arrive at the position with a fire service background, and it is an impressive one. In addition to spending the
majority of his 19-year career firefighting and providing emergency medical service, Josh was a long-standing board member on
the department’s local fire union. As Chief, he has continued to develop himself running all aspects of the Fire Department while
simultaneously serving as Chief Administrator of the Western-Wayne Urban Search and Rescue Team, Vice President of
Southeast Michigan’s Association of Fire Chiefs, and instructing at EMU’s Fire Staff & Command School. As Director, Josh will
be responsible for planning, administering, budgeting and continually developing the 200-person Public Safety Department, con-
sisting of the Police, Fire and Emergency Management Divisions, men and women of the highest integrity. Josh is a life-long
Canton man, living in the community since the age of 5, he and his wife Lisa are now raising their two sons Jacob (age 12) and
Joseph (age 9) in our fine community. Director Meier thanked the board, the community, and his family. He pledged his service
to the staff and Community. Motion by Anthony, supported by Williams to enter the promotion of Josh Meier to Director of
Public Safety into the public record. Motion carried by all members present.

that the Board of Trustees of the Charter Township of Canton does hereby recognize and
extends its appreciation to Susan Doughty for 19years of dedication and commitment to the Canton Community, and wishes her
a happy and healthy retirement.
Citizen’s Non-Agenda Item Comments:
George Miller, 1946 Briarfield, asked when the paving
of Forest Brook Subdivision will begin. Director Faas replied there is not specific schedule, however, in general, the project
should be done during the time period of mid-June to the beginning of September. Mr. Miller asked is there a protocol for han-
dling anonymous calls to ordinance regarding leaves blowing or barking dogs. He feels this could take police officers away from
handling more important matters. Ms. McLaughlin agreed to get this policy information to Mr. Miller. Mike Grayshaw, 42207
Briarcliff Ct, inquired about the home at 42245 Saltz that is in disrepair. It has a large hole from a pool demolition. As there is
no fence around the pool, he feels this is a hazard to the community. He has left several messages with the Ordinance Department.
The current owner is filling the hole with metal and concrete debris. He feels this is damaging the value of his property. Ms.
McLaughlin stated his concerns are valid. The Board is aware of this problem and is working with Public Safety to remedy this
situation. Director Meier stated he was made aware of the problem today and started working on it immediately. He gave Mr.
Grayshaw his contact information and agreed to address this matter and get this resolved.

into apartment fire
Tail Wagger's 1990, a local 501 (C) (3)
non-profit organization will be hosting a
Dog License and Vaccination Program
on Saturday, May 21 at the Inkster Fire
Department located at 27717 Michigan
Ave.
In an effort to enable resident pet
owners to affordably vaccinate and
license all their animals, Tail Wagger's
1990 offers packages for dogs and pup-
pies substantially below the normal cost,
Rutledge said in a prepared statement.
Pet owners can receive Rabies,
Distemper/Parvo and Bordetella as a
package for $30 or each vaccine can be
purchased individually for $12. Dog
licenses are required to be purchased
and sell for $10. Microchips are avail-
able and cost $30 which includes a life-
time registration which Tail Wagger's
performs for the pet owner.
To encourage Heartworm testing, the
first 50 dogs will receive a free heart-
worm test and their first month pill.
After the first 50 dogs, a lower price of
only $15 is being offered, but the first
month pill is included in the cost.
Heartworm testing results will be given
on the spot along with the ability to pur-
chase theheartwormpreventative.
Residents unable to come out May 21
are encouraged to contact the Tail
Wagger's Wellness Center at (734) 855-
4077 to schedule an appointment.
The Wellness Center is located at
28418 Five Mile Road, between
Middlebelt and Inkster at Harrison and
does not charge an office visit or exam
fee.
The vaccine prices will slightly vary
for scheduled appointments.
“By offering the Dog License &
Vaccination Program to the residents of
Inkster it is with high hopes that people
of all income levels will take advantage
of this affordable vaccination clinic to
get their pets properly vaccinated and
avoid further health issues. We are excit-
ed to help the animals in the City of
Inkster and will do whatever we can to
get themup-to-date and heartworm test-
ed,” said Tail Wagger's Founder Laura
Zain.
For cat owners, appointments can be
made at the Livonia Wellness Center to
receive Rabies and Distemper individu-
ally for only $12 each.
Tail Wagger's 1990 is committed to
helping people help animals, Zain said.
It is their ultimate goal to be able to sup-
port dedicated pet owners who are in
need of assistance along with providing
necessary funding for those animals in
emergency situations, she added.
Fire officials in Inkster are continuing
the investigation into the cause of a fire
Saturday afternoon which destroyed 36
apartment units.
Firefighters from Inkster, Wayne-
Westland and Garden City battled the
blaze for several hours Saturday at the
Canterbury Woods Apartments on Tobin
Drive near Beech Daly Road and
Avondale.
Firefighters responded to the blaze
within 6 minutes of the first call, which
came in sometime after 1 p.m. according
toFire InspectorBobRoths.
Firefighters were unable to immedi-
ately control the blaze which reportedly
started on the second floor of one build-
ing and quickly spread to three other
structures in the complex which were
fully engaged in flames. The buildings
apparently share an attic space which
allowed the fire to spread quickly from
one building to the next.
Residents reported that they were
startled by the blaze and that firefighters
and neighbors were forced to kick-in
doors to alert residents to the danger
and evacuate them from the rapidly
spreading blaze.
Cleanup efforts were continuing at
the site during the weekend. Many of the
100 people displaced did not have
renters' insurance and are relying on the
RedCross to find themshelter and cloth-
ing in the aftermathof the blaze.
Remarkably, firefighters said, there
were no injuries reported in the inci-
dent.
Roth said that while the investigation
into the fire is continuing, fire officials
believe the cause was accidental and do
not suspect anymalicious activity.
