More than 12 weeks of hard
work paid off for students from
Central City Dance Center in
Canton recently.
The student dancers compet-
ed against 10 studios from
Michigan and Indiana in April
during the Encore DCS Dance
Competition inFowlerville.
The students performed in
several styles of dance including:
jazz, tap, hip hop, lyrical and
modern and were also divided
into solo, duo/trio, small group,
large group and line and produc-
tion categories.
Students from Central City
Dance Center won seven
Diamond awards; 49 Platinum
awards; 11 High Gold awards
andmore than 36 Overall awards
in a particular category.
"Students began conditioning
in September, but didn't begin
working on the competition cho-
reography until January. It took
about 12 weeks to create the cho-
reography and get it ready for
competition," said Erin Kearney,
one of the studio dance instruc-
tors.
Special recognition awards
were given to students of Central
City Dance Center for standing-
out among the competition.
The
Best
Emotional
Execution Award went to the
Central City Dance Teen
Competitive Group. The High
Energy Award was presented to
the Central City Adult
Competitive Tap Team for their
presentation of Proud Mary and
theMost Entertaining Awardwas
awarded to the Studio's Elite
Competitive team, which com-
prises the top dancers at the
Canton studio.
"The competition was very
tough. We are proud of the
accomplishments of all of our
students and are proud to repre-
sent Canton Township," said Tim
Smola, the owner and director of
Central CityDance.
Canton residents Giovanni
Succurro, age 10, and Plymouth
senior Carissa Heestand, 18, as
well as Brownstown resident,
P a r k e r
Brudzinski,
age 13, all
received special scholarships to
perform at the upcoming nation-
al dance competition in
Charlotte, SC in July.
"After reflecting on such a suc-
cessful dance 2016 season, our
students are really looking for-
ward to attending nationals," said
Tamara Smola, owner and direc-
tor of Central CityDance.
The Central City Summer
Dance Jam begins July 12 and
continues through Aug. 18. The
studio is currently accepting stu-
dents into a 6-week Summer
Dance Jam and 3-day dance

It's official.
Joshua C. Meier took his oath
of office last week and is now the
Canton Township Director of
Public Safety.
Meier was selected for the
post, created when Todd
Mutchler retired and took a job
withNorthville Township, after a
competitive internal process,
officials said. His official oath
was administered by Township
ClerkTerryBennett during a reg-
ular meeting of the members of
the board of trustees.
Meier began his career in
Canton Township by volunteer-
ing as a Canton Police Explorer
during his years at the former
Plymouth-Salem High School.
He was later hired as a Public
Safety Service Officer and began
his 19-year rise through the ranks
of the fire department. He
worked as a firefighter/para-
medic, was promoted to deputy
chief, and prior to his latest pro-
motion was Canton Township
FireChief.
Meier is the first Canton
Public Safety Director with a fire
service background. In addition
to his firefighting and paramedic
duties, he served as a member of
the local fire union board. While
chief of the fire department, he
simultaneously served as chief
administrator of the Western-
Wayne Urban Search and
Rescue Team; as Vice President
of
Southeast
Michigan
Association of Fire Chiefs and
served as an instructor at
Eastern Michigan University
FireStaff andCommandSchool.
Meier will be responsible for
planning, administering, budget-
ing and continually developing
the 200-person Canton Public
Safety Department, consisting of
83 sworn police officers, 65 fire-
fighters and other personnel. He
will also oversee emergency
management and ordinance
services. His salary has been set
at $127,846 annually.
Meier is a life-long Canton
Township resident. He and his
wife, Lisa, are the parents of two
sons, Jacob, 12, and Joey, 9.
