Canton Township Police are
aware of someone posing as a
Canton Township Purchasing
official, using the name of for-
mer Supervisor TomYack.
“Canton Township is not
going to suffer any loss for this
scam,” said Lt. Michael Steckel
of the Canton Police
Department. The police depart-
ment was notified by some ven-
dors. “But we already knew
about it,” Steckel said.
The group is emailing tech-
nology service and equipment
providers inquiring if they are
interested in responding to an
RFP (request for proposal). The
emails also request information
on pricing for some products as
well as banking information.
The person/group is using
email addresses that, at first
glance, appear to be from
Canton Township, andMarch 12
registered a website domain
name,
The
official Canton website address
only has one 'n' at the end of
Canton.
Steckel noted vendors could
lose money in this scam, adding
such scams from overseas
groups are often targeted at
municipalities, colleges/univer-
sities and others.
“It's a pretty common phish-
ing scam,” he said.
Canton police are investigat-
ing how many vendors were
contacted.
The vendors have noticed
spelling errors, which also have
included an extra “i” in
Michigan, he noted.
Canton also has no procure-
ment department, which ven-
dors often know, Steckel said.
“Several vendors have been
contacted through this phishing
scam.”
“We just are urging anyone
whomay have gotten fraudulent
information to contact us direct-
ly,” commented Canton
Economic
Development
ManagerKristenThomas.
Anyone who suspects they
have received fraudulent infor-
mation or inquiries fromCanton
Township, is asked to call
Steckel at (734) 394-5420.

zation.

ing and works for Central

State Rep. Kristy Pagan said
she was glad to be honored March
13 for her parks and recreation
advocacy.
“Please know you have a cham-
pion in me in the Legislature,” the
Canton Democrat told the town-
ship Board of Trustees and staff at
the regularmeeting. Shewas laud-
ed for her work with an award
from the Michigan Recreation and
ParkAssociation.
“This year, we're happy to
announce that Kristy Pagan is the
recipient,” said Laura Mortier,
township recreation coordinator.
“She has been an advocate and an
active supporter of CantonLeisure
Services.”
Pagan was recognized for work
locally with the B.L.O.C.K. youth
and teen center. She's been active
with the “Lead Like a Girl” pro-
gram for girls ages 11-15, including
introducing them to women lead-
ers and recognizing them on the
House of Representatives floor in
Lansing.
Pagan has also worked against
bullying and hate crimes with the
“Not in Our Town” initiative, the
MartinLutherKing Jr. celebration,
and the B.L.O.C.K. Teen
Experience Camp. The latter high-
lights careers in parks and recre-
ation.
“Canton Township is fortunate
to be represented by an elected
official that is so committed to
youth leadership,”Mortier said.
Pagan noted other local mRPA
awards for teen leadership and
marketing as she thanked the
board members and Canton
Leisure Services. She noted girls
need strong rolemodels.
“We believe you can't be what
you can't see,” she said. Pagan
cited her committee assignment
that helps with parks and recre-
ation as well as Great Lakes
preservation.
“I really can't thank you enough
for this nomination and the actual
award,” she said.
“As someone who grew up in
Canton and calls Cantonmy home,
I am proud to have helped launch
the Lead #LikeAGirl program in
Canton Township,” Pagan said. “I
have had the honor of inviting this
program to our state capital and
showing the young woman what a
day in the life of a legislator is like.
It is with the support of Canton
Leisure Services that this program
is a success. By showing girls and
young womenwhat it's like to lead,
we are instilling in them that they
can achieve anything. I am also
grateful to have Canton Leisure
Services as an ally in protecting
our natural resources. Canton is a
thriving community because of our
parks and recreation and trails
system. Our economy and tourism
industry rely on our Great Lakes,
state parks and recreation areas,
and as Michiganders, we share a
special responsibility for main-
taining our state's natural beauty.”
