Society calendar is now available and
has beendiscounted to $5.

Citizens Academy enrollment open
Canton residents who want to learn
more about how their police department
works will have that opportunity during
the upcoming Citizens PoliceAcademy in
the township.
Individuals who attend the academy
will have the opportunity to learn the
policies and operational procedures of
the department through presentations,
demonstrations andhands-on activities
This year, the Citizens Police Academy
will take place from 6-9 p.m. on
Thursdays for eight weeks beginning
April 6 and continuing throughMay 25.
Class size is limited for this free pro-
gram. Applicants are limited to Canton
Township residents who are at least 21
years of age. Applicants must have no
felony convictions and no misdemeanor
convictions in the past three years,
Applicants will be subject to a back-
ground check.
Applications for the academy will

the front desk of the Canton Police

Art exhibit continues
The Northville Art House is present-
ing the 11th Annual Member Exhibition,
featuring original works in all mediums,
including painting, drawing, photogra-
phy, sculpture, jewelry, clay, and mixed
media. The exhibition showcases the tal-
ents of more than 60 member artists of
the Northville Art House as well as rec-
ognizes the people who support the
growth and creativity of the arts in the
community.
Applications are being accepted for
memberships to be considered for future
Northville Art House member exhibi-
tions and events as well as other benefits.

The Romulus Public Library will host
a special children's program for Black
HistoryMonth.
Miz Rosie the Storyteller will be at the
library presenting: "African American
and African Folktales with African
Instruments" at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb.
21. This activity is funded in part by the
Michigan Council for Arts and Cultural
Affairs and the Michigan Humanities
Council. All ages are welcome and no
registration is necessary.

Mayor to speak
The Greater Romulus Chamber of
Commerce will host Mayor LeRoy D.
Burcroff as the luncheon speaker begin-
ning at noon Tuesday, Feb. 21 at the
Sheraton at DetroitMetroAirport.
Burcroff is the eighthmayor of the city
and was elected in 2013 after serving on
the city council for 16 years.
Admission is $20 for chamber mem-
bers and $25 for non-members as seating
is limited.

Friends host library fundraiser
The Friends of the Canton Public
Library andTony Sacco's will host aWine
and Craft Beer Tasting event from 7-9
p.m. Feb. 22.
The event, a fundraiser for the library,
will take place at Tony Sacco's and
include samples of red and white wines,
craft beers and an appetizer buffet. The
restaurant is located at 1663 North
Canton Center Road in Canton.
Participants must be 21 or older to
attend.

HealthyCoalitionmeets
Beaumont Healthy Wayne Community
coalition is a partnership between
Beaumont Health, Wayne-Westland
Community Schools District and the City
of Wayne. The coalition meetings are an
effort to prevent the incidences of dia-
betes, cardio-vascular disease, and obesi-
ty in the City of Wayne by implementing
healthy eating and active living strategies
in the community, according to a
spokesperson.
Meetings are open to community
organizations and citizens at no cost and
take place from 8:30-10 a.m. at HYPE

BelovedCommunity event planned
Beloved Community members will
host the Final Friday conversation cen-
tered around the Ava DuVernay film 13th
at 7 p.m. Feb. 24 at Geneva Presbyterian
Church, 58345 North Sheldon Road in
Canton.
Members are asked to bring a dish to
pass.
The film is a documentary referring to
the 13th Amendment to the Constitution,
which reads "Neither slavery nor invol-
untary servitude, except as a punishment
for crime whereof the party shall have
been duly convicted, shall exist within
the United States..." The progression
from that second qualifying clause to the
horrors of mass criminalization and the
American prison industry is laid out by
DuVernay.
