The Westland Fire Department will
be offering a lot more than Band-Aids
and gentle-attention during Blues,
Brews andBarbecue this year.
According to Fire Chief Michael
Stradtner, the emergency health pro-
fessionals will also be offering lessons
in hands-only CPR (cardiopulmonary
resuscitation) a skill that can mean the
difference between life anddeath.
“We will have a large presence at
the event this year,” Stradtner said,
“just to ensure that everyone is acting
safety. We haven't had a serious inci-
dent at the event in several years.
Mostly, minor needs like Band-Aids or
maybe theheat.”
Firefighters and EMTs will use the
time to teach CPR which is a valuable
skill everyone canuse, he said.
He added that the entire adminis-
trative staff of the Westland Fire
Department would be on hand during
Blues, Brews and Barbecue and many
would be riding through the grounds in
golf carts to help ensure the safety of
visitors.
“There will be medics on site
throughout the event,” he said.
He added that at night, particularly
during the fireworks display on
Saturday, there would be two fire
trucks on standby at each end of the
grounds, alongwitha rescue vehicle.
“When it's dark, we're not that visi-
ble, but we are there,” he said. One fire
truck will be very near the fireworks
display to immediately extinguish any
small hot spots from the firework deto-
nations.
“They do a great job of keeping the
ground wet and putting any of those
that happen out immediately,” he said.
“We will have a very large presence
designed to keep everybody safe,”
Stradtner said.
