Veterans Memorial Garden to be dedicated
Westland will mark Veteran's
Day this year with the 2 p.m. dedi-
cation of the long-awaited Veterans
Memorial Garden located behind
theWilliamP. Faust PublicLibrary.
It has takenmore than 6 years of
fund-raising efforts to bring the
memorial to the community.
Included are 10 marble panels with
information about each of the 12
wars in which American service-
men andwomen fought.
In addition, there will be a Walk
of History that will consist of 12
coves that will each feature a mon-
ument explaining the history of
each war depicted on the center
panels. Thee also be a special cove
honored Prisoners of War andmiss-
ing in action servicemen and
women. Another 26 park benches
are included in the memorial
which is estimated to have cost
$250,000.
Funding was provided by spon-
sorships and fundraising efforts of
groups like the Westland Veterans
Association.
A recent Noodles N' Neighbors
dinner hosted by State Rep. Robert
Kosowski,
Wayne
County
Commissioner Richard LeBlanc,
State Sen. Glenn Anderson, State
Rep. David Knezek and Westland
Mayor William Wild generated
$4,500 for the memorial. The
fundraising dinner was started
about 5 years ago by LeBlanc. The
memorial got another boost in fund-
ing from LeBlanc who dedicated
$60,000 of his discretionary $102,000
Wayne County Parks allocation to
theVeteransMemorial project.
Scheduled speakers at the dedi-
cation will include U.S. Major Gen.
Gregory Vadnais, director of the
State Department of Military and
Veterans Affairs and retired

Adjutant General of Veterans
Affairs for the Michigan
Department of Military and
Veterans Affairs from 2003 through
2011.

will participate in the ceremony
and the Westland John Glenn and
Wayne Memorial High School
Junior Reserve Officer Training
Corps color guards will also partici-

Barbara Spreitzer-Berent of
Northville has been called “volun-
teer extraordinaire.” Now she will
be called the 2013 winner of the
Andrus Award for Community
Service, AARP's most prestigious
and visible volunteer award.
She will be honored during
AARP Michigan's volunteer recog-
nition ceremony inGrandRapids.
The AARP Andrus Award for
Community Service recognizes
members and volunteers who are
significantly enhancing the lives of
individuals age 50 and over. The
award was named for Ethel Percy
Andrus, a retired educator from
California who founded AARP in
1958.
Spreitzer-Berent took the lead-
ership role this year in training and
mobilizing an army of more than 30
volunteers to reach out to
Michiganders to help them better
understand the Affordable Care
Act.
She and the volunteer corps
made dozens of presentations
reaching thousands of people on
health care reform issues through-
out the state. She also made many
media appearances to get the mes-
sage out about AARP's work in this
area, including an interview on a
CBS TV special about the new
health care law.
“People are frustrated with the
emotions surrounding the law,” she
said. “They want to know how it
will affect them and their family
members.”
Spreitzer-Berent also has writ-
ten a training manual on
Affordable Care Act presentations
and has authored several articles
on age-friendly communities. She
is referred to AARP Michigan
staffers as “our 14th staff person.”
One nominating letter said of
the Andrus Award winner: “Her
volunteer work fits AARP's mission
and vision like a glove. The work
she has done champions positive
social change and delivers value
through information and service.”
Thomas Kimble, AARP
Michigan President said, “AARP
Michigan takes great pride in con-
gratulating Barbara Spreitzer-
Berent for her tireless community
service. Her unmatched record of
achievement, service and commit-
ment as a volunteer provides an
extraordinary example of the dif-
ference volunteerism can make in
the lives of individuals and in the
well-being and vitality of a commu-
nity.”
Spreitzer-Berent, 60, is volun-
teer coordinator of health and sup-
portive services for AARP
Michigan. She retired in 2010 after
careers in urban planning, geron-
tology andpublic health.
