The Old Village Restaurant
Crawl in Plymouth will take
place from 5:30-8:30 p.m. Monday,
Aug. 21.
Tickets are advance-sale only
and are priced at$15 for adults

Police academy
applications accepted
The City of Romulus Public
Safety Department is nowaccept-
ing applications for the sixth
Citizens Academy Class - 2017
Fall Session. The 15-week pro-
gram will commence Wednesday,
Sept. 6, and will conclude with a
graduation ceremony on
Wednesday, Dec. 13. Classes will
take place from 6:30 - 9:30 p.m.
each week at the Romulus
AthleticCenter.
Due to the overwhelming
response to the program, appli-
cants must pre-register for the
class. The class size is free and
limited to 25 students.
Applications may be obtained
in person at the Romulus Police
Department, or downloaded from

Farmersmarket nowopen
The Canton Farmers Market
will be open from 9 a.m. until 1
p.m. every Sunday through Oct.
12 (closed July 2) at Preservation
Park, located at 500 N. Ridge

This open-air-market features
a variety of Michigan grown and
made food as well as hand-craft-
ed items. The Farmers Market

essay contest nowopen
State Rep. Jeff Noble of
Plymouth announced his essay
contest for students in Plymouth,
Canton andNorthville.
The contest is open to students
in grades six through 12. Students
are asked to write a minimum of
250 words and no more than 500
on the topic “Why do you like liv-
ing in Michigan?” Essays should
be submitted by mail or email by
Sept. 1 and must include stu-
dent's name, address, email or
phone number, school and grade
level.
Thewinner will be announced
on Sept. 18 and invited to Lansing
to be a state representative for a

Health Fair vendors sought
The Romulus Senior Center
Annual Health Fair is now
accepting vendors for the event
planned forOct. 10.
Health professionals can high-
light their companies with the
senior community. Table space
rental is $100. Gifts to be raffled
off are also being sought.
Set up will begin at 9 a.m. and
the fair will be open from 9:30
a.m. until 2 p.m.

Ride for RedShieldSaturday
The Annual Ride for the Red
Shield, a fundraiser for The
Salvation Army will begin with
sign-in at 10 a.m. Saturday, Aug.
19 at 1258 Biddle Ave. in
Wyandotte. Riders will depart
from the Wyandotte Salvation
Army at 11 a.m. and stop at the
Plymouth office before ending at
BaggerDave's.
Registration cost is $30 per
ride and $25 per passenger which
includes a continental breakfast
and lunch.

Art entry deadline nears
The Village Theater at Cherry
Hill is now accepting entries for
the 25th Annual Canton Fine Arts
Exhibition, which will be on dis-
play Oct. 6 - Nov. 4. Entries for
the exhibition will be accepted
throughAug. 21. Michigan artists
can enter their work online at

All media is accepted for the
exhibition. Only digital image
files onCDs orUSBdriveswill be
accepted for review. Work sub-
mitted on CDs/USB drives must
be in JPEG format and 300 dpi.
No slides will be accepted for
consideration. Paintings and
hangings should not exceed 5 feet
wide or 6 feet high, 40 pounds in
weight and must be properly and
appropriately framed and pre-
pared for hanging. Sculpture
dimensions must not exceed 5-
feet by 5-feet by 6 feet and 200
pounds in weight. Original works
of art must have been completed
in the last three years. A non-
refundable entry fee of $15 for
each submittedpiece is required.
The competition will award
$1,950 in cash prizes: Best of
Show $750; Second Place $500;
Third Place $300; two Honorable
Mentions of $100 each and four
Merit Awards of $50 each. The
Postmark/Hand Delivery dead-
line for entries is Aug. 21. Juried
result notification will be mailed
by Sept. 8.

Eclipse viewing party planned
The entire area will be in the
dark for a while Aug. 21, and the
Plymouth District Library will
make the momentous occasion a
little safer for everyone.
A total solar eclipse will occur
on Monday, Aug. 21 and will be
completely visible only within a
band across the entire contiguous
UnitedStates
A group viewing of the eclipse
is planned at Plymouth Township
Park from 12:30 until 4:30 p.m.
Aug. 21. Free safety glasses will
be availablewhile supplies last at
the
4-Seasons
Pavilion.
Attendees are encouraged to
bring a chair or blanket.
Plymouth Township officials and
the Bosch Community Fund are
making this event, hosted by the
PlymouthLibrary, possible.

Philharmonic sets auditions
The Michigan Philharmonic
Youth Orchestra will host final
auditions for 2017 Monday, Aug.
21, at the Plymouth Arts &
Recreation Complex (PARC).
Auditions for all levels of strings,
winds, brass and percussion may
audition. The ensemble will
rehearse from 5-6 p.m. Tuesdays
at the PARC in downtown
Plymouth.

Yard sale benefits food pantry
TheLighthouseHomeMission
will host a yard sale from 9 a.m.
until 7 p.m. Sept. 1 through Sept.
9. All proceeds will be used to
purchase food for the pantry
which serves those in need in the
community. The church is located
at 34033 Palmer Road in
Westland.
Volunteers are needed to help
set up from 9 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Aug. 29 and for tearing down the
saleSept. 9.
The church is also looking for
donations of any type of gently
used items for sale.
