Information about the millage request
of the Northville Public Schools set for the
May 5 ballot is now available from the
NorthvilleEducational Foundation.
Voters in the Northville Public Schools
District will be asked to consider renewing
the Building Site and Sinking Fund mill-
age originally approved in 2011 and used
to make much-needed repairs across the
10 district school buildings and other facil-
ities.
According to the Northville
Educational Foundation, which has not
taken any stand on the issue, the 0.9978-
mill request is a renewal and would not
result in a tax increase for school district
homeowners.
Priority projects over the next five-year
period fall into the categories of Safety and
Security, Improving Classroom Learning,
Improving Energy Efficiency and
Reducing Costs, and Keeping Buildings
Operational. If approved, the 0.9978-mill
Building and Site Sinking Fund will help
preserve general fund dollars to accom-
plish the core mission of instruction and
student learning; enable students to learn
in a safe, secure and healthy environment;
protect the community investment in the
school buildings and facilities; maintain
appropriate learning facilities that enable
the district and community to keep and
attract residents and keep Northville tax-
payer dollars inNorthville.
Aprepared release from the foundation
suggested voters can find more informa-
tion regarding the millage at the district
website, including a more detailed
overview, answers to frequently asked
questions, a list of anticipated projects,
alongwithballot and voter information.
Questions and comments may also be
sent to

ing to the news release.

to others in the community,
organizers said. It's a chance
for book lovers to share their
love of reading by giving out
their favorite books to a recipi-

doesn't read for pleasure or
ownbooks.
That gift is the spark that
inspires the recipient to keep
reading, creating an engaged,
informed community, she
added.
The Canton Public Library
was identified by citizens as the
best-loved facility in Canton. It
averages 4,000 patron visits
daily and circulates more than
1.6million items annually.

Jane Austen Tea served
The Northville Historical Society will
host a Jane Austen Tea from 1-3:30 p.m.
May 9 at the Cady Inn in Northville. The
tea will feature a talk about Jane Austen
by novelist AnnickHivert-Carthew.
Austen framed her imaginative and
romantic stories around the events of her
own family. She captured and portrayed
her youth in England, showing her read-
ers a portion of 18thCentury England that
is a credit to honorable behavior, gentle-
ness, courtesy, manners, and respect for
others.
Austen wrote six novels at a time when
women were not considered worthy of
being published, so initially none of them
bore her name. At age 35 she produced
her best known works, such as Pride and
Prejudice and Sense and Sensibility, with
the author identified merely as "A Lady."
Both are literary classics and none of
Austen's books have ever been out of
print.
Hivert-Carthew will discuss the life
and works of Austen. Born and educated
in France, Hivert-Carthew currently lives
in Michigan. She first became known for
her work on Antoine de Lamothe
Cadillac, founder of Detroit. She wrote
"Cadillac and the Dawn of Detroit" in
1994, then went on to write five more
books.
The tea is a fund raiser for the
Northville Historical Society, and will be
cateredbyVictoria's TeaSalon.
Tickets are limited and are priced at
$35 or $30 for Northville Historical
Society members. Tickets are non-refund-
able but canbe applied to a future tea.

with township officials during a visit last
year and she seemed amenable to the
plan, officials said. The benefit to the
Detroit department is a cost savings in
having Cantonmanage water usage in the
township.
Detroit levied a 21-percent water and
sewer rate increase on the township this
year. To offset those increased costs, town-
ship officials used $2.5 million from the
local water-sewer fund, allowing the
increase to homeowners at the lower 8.6
percent rate. LaJoy added that the town-
ship was able to help offset the costs by
“goodbasic financialmanagement.”
