Hospital hosts blood drive
St. Mary Mercy Hospital and the
American Red Cross are partnering in a
blood drive campaign from 6 a.m. until 6
p.m. today, Dec. 27, in the North Auditorium
at St. Mary Mercy Hospital, 36475 Five Mile
Road at Levan. The past six blood drives
during 2012 have collected 422 pints of
blood, just shy of a goal to collect 450 pints.
The American Red Cross encourages area
residents to join St. Mary Mercy Hospital
employees and volunteers to donate blood
andhelpmeet or exceed the goal.

There will also be appointment sheets in the
hospital cafeteria. Walk-ins are accepted,
but appointments are preferred.

Christmas BreakCamp offered
Children ages 6 to 12 are invited to partic-
ipate in Christmas Break Kids Camp at the
Romulus Athletic Center, 35765 Northline
Road.
The program is offered while children
are on winter break from school. The first
three-day session will be 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.
Jan. 2-4.
Camp participants will have fun in a safe,
instructor-led environment. There will be
numerous games and activities, such as arts
and crafts, dodge ball, basketball, rock
climbing and swimming.
Admission is $50 per session for mem-
bers; $65 for non-members. Lunch can be
provided for an additional $4 per day.
Early drop-off (7 to 9 a.m.) and late pickup
(3 to 5 p.m.) are available at $6 per child per
hour. Advance registration is required for
the service.

Kwanzaa to be celebrated.
A celebration of Kwanzaa, with a focus on
the principle of Imani (faith) will take place
from3-6 p.m. NewYears Day at theRomulus
Civic League, 11495 Wahrman St. in
Romulus.
Therewill be fellowship and food served.
The event is sponsored by the Romulus
Civic League and the Kheper-Ra Study
Group of Detroit.
"Through faith in ourselves, our commu-
nities, our leaders, our creator, we will

together," a spokesperson said.

Lifeguard training offered
An American Red Cross lifeguard train-
ing course is scheduled for 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
Jan. 2-4 at the Romulus Athletic Center,
35765NorthlineRoad.
Participants in the winter break course
will be certified in Red Cross lifeguarding,
first aid, CPR, AED and blood borne
pathogens. The course is open to individuals
at least 15 years old. Students will be
required to pass swimming prerequisites on
the first day of class to continue with the
course. Participants must attend all three
sessions.
Admission is $240, which includes course
materials.

Group hosts fun run
Belleville Young Life will sponsor a Ring
in the New Year! 5K Fun Run/Walk on
Saturday, Jan. 5, 2013 at VanBurenPark.
The event is a fundraiser and participat-
ing runners and walkers can compete for
prizes while supporting the Young Life
organization. Registration will begin at 10
a.m. and the 1K race for all children will
begin at 10:30 followed immediately by the
5K race. The registration fee is $20 for adults
and $10 for children. Proceeds from the
event will go to benefit BellevilleYoungLife.

Artist'swork exhibited
The Village Theater at Cherry Hill will
exhibit the artwork of Kathy Kosins through
Dec. 31.
The artwork brings together a collection
of abstract works inspired by the music of
jazz greats, including strains from Miles
Davis' trumpet, Charlie Parkers' sax andBud
Powells' piano riffs translated into color and
texture.
A past recipient of the Michigan Council
for the Arts' Jazz Composer of the Year,
Kosins has received grants from Michigan's
ArtServe advocacy group. Her clinics and
workshops teach performance skills along-
side business strategies for the independent
artist and have been a success at colleges
anduniversities across theUSA.
The exhibit is free and available from 10
a.m. until 2 p.m. Monday through Friday,
during public performances at the theater

Holy Flowers is topic
Holy Flowers will be he topic of the
Dearborn Heights Garden Club meeting at
11:30 a.m. Thursday, Jan. 3.
The origin and history and uses of Bible-
related flowers and how they can form the
basis for a theme gardenwill be discussed.

Potters' classes scheduled
The Village Potters Guild will begin the
winter termJan. 8, 2013, at 340N. Main St. in
Plymouth. The 15-week classes are open to
adults who are just beginning to those who
are very experienced in pottery. Classes are
offered from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. and from
6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Wednesdays. Instructors
will provide demonstrations and hands-on
assistance in hand-building and wheel
throwing techniques as well as glazing.
Specialized sessions for raku, pit firing or
horse-hair firingwill also be includedduring
the term.
The guild also offers an independent
study class that meets from 6:30-9:30 p.m.
Tuesdays. Artists with intermediate to
advanced skills are welcome to participate
in this student directed class.
In addition to the instruction, all partici-
pants can attend open studio hours from 9
a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday and Saturday
mornings. Each student receives up to 75
pounds of clay, all firings and glazes with
their fees. Tuition is $350 for the term.

Annual Daddy Daughter Dance set
Registration is open and spaces are avail-
able for the annual Daddy Daughter Dance
sponsored by the Plymouth Recreation
Department. The event is open to all ages
andwill take place from6:30-8:30 p.m. Feb. 2
at theCultural CenterReceptionRoom.
Dads, uncles, grandfathers are welcome
to dance with their date to the music of a
disc jockey. Light refreshments and snacks

Yoga classes offered
Adult Slow Flow Yoga for ages 18 and
older will be offered by the Plymouth
RecreationDepartment.
The classes are multi-level and designed
to improve posture and balance, develop
body awareness, increase strength and flexi-
bility and relieve stress. The class will incor-
porate a gentle flowofmovement and breath
with a focus on form and body awareness.
Each classwill endwith a guidedmeditation
and relaxation.
Students should bring a yogamat, blanket
(optional for end of class relaxation) and
wear comfortable clothing.
The class fee is $90 or $75 for City of
Plymouth residents.
Classes will be offered on bothFriday and
Wednesdaymornings.
