We are grateful for the work they do each
day to teach, support, work with, and/or pro-
vide for our students, families and col-
leagues.
Thank you, as always, for partnering with
NorthvillePublic Schools towork together to
keep our children safe, and able to focus on
learning in a caring and supportive school
environment.
Please know that the process of carefully
reviewing our safety and security protocols
continues, with the assistance of our local
police departments, community leaders and
security experts. We appreciate the feedback
that our school staff, principals, and parents
have provided, andwill keep our community
informed to the extent possible and appro-
priate.
We wish you safe travels - near or far this
holiday season, and hope that the New Year
brings youpeace, joy, healthandhappiness.

Symphony thanks supporters
To the editor;
As 2012 draws to a close we want to thank
all our supporters: our donors, our season
subscribers, and our ticket buyers. Over the
past 10 days theMichigan Philharmonic per-
formed five holiday concerts enjoyed by over
2000 people! It was our privilege to share
beautiful music with people of all ages
throughout SoutheastMichigan.
Wishing you every happiness this holiday
season and prosperity in the New Year.
Thank you for being a friend of the arts and
we look forward to continuing our relation-
ship in the coming year.
All the best to youand your family,
BethStewart, executive director
MichiganPhilharmonic
gave him back in 1999. He'll love the silly
thing and I'm betting he'll never remember
he's owned it for nearly 13 years. There are
also several shirts and sweaters in his closet
that still have the tags attached, too. I can
wrap those babies up and he'll think that
Santa really likes hima lot this year.
And who wouldn't want a variable 16-bit
drill sharpening set? Seriously, themanwill
think he's gone to heaven when he opens
that little beauty.
Oh, and there is also a brand new box of
35-millimeter aluminum film canisters.
Never been opened. Talk about a “unique”
gift, eh? He will think he can add these to
his collection that he knows he has “some-
where.”
Oh, and I can also wrap up a couple of
these flash attachments for cameras that
are sitting in the storage room. The cameras
are no longer made or used (with good rea-
son) but knowing my beloved, he'll treasure
them and tell me repeatedly how valuable
they are since they are so rare. (Good rea-
sons for that, too, but I know when to keep
mymouth shut.)
So, if I get all this stuff wrapped and
under the tree, finish my baking, buy my
Christmas groceries and get the turkey in
the oven on time, it will be a very Merry
Christmas at our house.
Iwish the same for youand yours.

County opens command
center for road operations
Stonefly searchers are sought
Wayne County Executive Robert Ficano
and the Wayne County Roads Division have
unveiled a high-tech Command Center
designed to optimize Road Division opera-
tions duringweather events.
“This system is one of the first of its kind
in Metro Detroit and in the United States,”
said Ficano. “It's another example of how
Wayne County is improving services to citi-
zens while making the best use of our
resources.”
The state-of-the-art Command Center is
equipped with a large video wall, multiple
computer stations, video conferencing capa-
bilities and a 24-hour call-in center.
The Command Center, which was com-
pleted last spring, is the final piece of a triad
of integrated technologies implemented by
the Wayne County Roads Division. Officials
expect the Command Center will synergize
operations within the Wayne County Roads
Division
For example, utilizing data from the coun-
ty's web-based Compass technology, which
tracks operations including snow plowing in
real time, the Command Center can revise
operational strategies as quickly as the
weather changes.
Road hazards can also be reported to the
Command Center 24-hours a day by calling
Center's 888-ROAD-CREW (1-888-762-3273).
The complaint is registered in the electronic
reporting system. The system is designed to
address roads hazards quickly and efficient-
ly, making roads safer for drivers, a
spokesman said.
Friends of the Rouge (FOTR) is looking
for volunteers to help with the 12th annual
search for stoneflies onSaturday Jan. 26.
Volunteers have been helping track these
unusual insects since 2002.
Finding a stonefly living in the river is a
good indication that the river is healthy
because these small insects require cold,
cleanwater.
Last year, 73 volunteers found these
"nuggets of gold" at 14 of 32 sites. This year,
they hope to find evenmore, a spokesperson
said.
The search begins at the University of
Michigan-Dearborn at 9 a.m. No searching is
done in Dearborn; volunteers carpool out in
10-12 teams to Rouge streams located
around metropolitan Detroit. Volunteers
must pre-register by Jan. 11 on the FOTR
website www.therouge.org or by calling
(313)792-9621.
Volunteers must dress for the weather
and be prepared to be out in the cold for sev-
eral hours. Only trained team leaders go in
the water; volunteers search through sam-
ples on the bank. Children 5 years and older
are welcome when accompanied by a partic-
ipating adult; groups of up to six people can
be accommodated.
The Annual Winter Stonefly Search is
part of a long-termmonitoring programcoor-
dinated by Friends of the Rouge. It is sup-
ported by the Alliance of Rouge
Communities and conducted in partnership
with Wayne County Department of Public
Services. A report on the results from the
Fall Bug Hunt Oct. 20 was just completed.
Data from the Winter Stonefly Search and
the spring and fall "Bug Hunts" is used to
track the health of the river and assess the
progress of river improvement projects.
Friends of the Rouge is a 501c3 non-profit
organization dedicated to promoting restora-
tion and stewardship of the Rouge River
ecosystem through education, citizen
involvement and other collaborative efforts,
for the purpose of improving the quality of
life for the people, plants, and animals of the
watershed. The Rouge River covers 466
square miles in three counties and 42 com-
munities in the metropolitan Detroit area.
