Historic State Wayne Theater is honored
School superintendent moves retirement date
The State Wayne Theater has
been chosen as the Business of the
Year inWayne.
The honor, presented during the
annual chamber of commerce
luncheon this month, went to
Phoenix Theaters, the operators of
the movie house located on
MichiganAvenueWest in the city.
“This business has been part of
some of the best community events
in Wayne during 2013,” said Wayne
Chamber of Commerce Executive
Director Paul Strom. “They set a
great example of giving back to the
community financially and other-
wise.”
Those contributions include a
benefit movie premier for a men-
toring program at Wayne Memorial
High School, entertaining partici-
pants in the Rotary Club holiday
parade with refreshments, visits
with Santa and a free screening of
themovieFrozen.
Cory Jacobson, owner of
Phoenix Theaters, accepted the
award and thanked the residents
of Wayne for supporting the the-
ater.
“In our first full year, attendance
is up 20 percent over the prior
year,” Jacobson said. “All the other
theaters in the metro area were
down or marginally up. We really
need your continued support. We
need to push attendance higher to
makeus profitable,” Jacobson said.
When Phoenix took over man-
agement of the State-Wayne, they
converted the four screens to fully
digital projection. The new man-
agement team also hosted sold-out
showings of the cult-favorite, The
Rocky Horror Picture Show, and
the theater was even the site of a
movie premiere last fall.
Tony Award winner and Wayne
Memorial High School alumni
Greg Jbara, a regular on Blue
Bloods, was featured in The
Infiltrators and attended the pre-
mier. The event was a benefit for
the Wayne Memorial Champions
mentoring program and was
attendedbymore than 800 people.
“The line was nearly three city
blocks long. In 30 years in the the-
ater business, I've never seen any-
thing like it,” Jacobson said. “It was
my proudest moment and it was a
great event. It shows what you can
dowhenwework together.”
TheRockyHorror Picture Show
is still showing at 11:30 p.m. on the
second Saturday of the month at
the State Wayne and continues to
draw large crowds.
Jacobson said the State-Wayne,
built in 1946, is an ideal place for
the cult film because the theater
has a stage which attracts the shad-
ow cast that acts out the film while
the characters are on screen.
After 17 years as superintendent
of the Wayne Westland Community
Schools, Dr. GregBaracy has decid-
ed to retire next year.
Baracy surprised members of
the board of education with the
announcement of his pending
retirement during a regular meet-
ing of the board last week. His
retirement will become effective
July 1, 2014.
Baracy is the longest-serving
superintendent of schools to serve
the district. He hadpreviously indi-
cated that he would retire at the
end of his contract July 30, 2015 but
opted to leave a year early.
Baracy is a product of the dis-
trict and attended Wayne-Westland
schools. He was hired in 1987 as an
assistant principal at the William
D. Ford Career Technical Center.
He became deputy superintendent
for general administration in the
district in 1992 and was named
superintendent in 1997.
Baracy sent a letter to district
employees in which he praised the
administrators with whom he has
worked, the teachers in the district
and the support staff for their
efforts. He called them a "truly
remarkable group of individuals,
and said he was grateful for the
unprecedented support of the
Wayne-Westland school community
over the years.
'Without their support, we col-
lectively could not have trans-
formed the Wayne-Westland
schools into a state-of-the-art
school district providing students
with the best educational opportu-
nities possible," he said. "Wayne-
Westland is well positioned to face
the challenges ahead and I amcon-
fident it will continue to excel."
The school board will begin a
search for a replacement for
Baracy.
Mayor hands out gift cards
Several last minute shoppers in Westland
got a pleasant surprise last week when they
were presented gift cards fromMayor William
Wild.
According to the National Retail
Federation, 20 to 40 percent of yearly sales for
small andmid-sized retailers take placewithin
the last two months of the year. To help local
business sales, Wild handed out gift cards to
last-minute shoppers last week at Westland
Shopping Center. The mayor positioned him-
self near Santa's display inside the center to
snag unsuspecting shoppers for the gifts.
“It is so important for us to promote local
businesses,” said Wild. “These businesses sup-
port our local community groups and Little
League clubs. They are always giving back to
the community and we want to show our
appreciation.”
As theAll-AmericanCity, Westland has cre-
ated the Shop and Dine district with more
than 160 different stores, restaurants and serv-
ices so, “there's really something to fit every-
one's budget,” said Wild.
Wild gave away more than $500 in gift
cards to lucky shoppers inside the center.
Celebrate Inkster events are planned

Martin Luther King Day and the begin-
ning of BlackHistoryMonth.

p.m. Saturday, Jan. 25 at the Inkster
Recreational Complex, 2025 Middlebelt
Road in Inkster.

munity change makers, food and infor-
mation about the community.
