The annual Inkster Legends Christmas
        
        
          Raffle was a “smashing success” despite
        
        
          some inclement weather, according to
        
        
          founder anddirectorFredSmiley.
        
        
          Every year, the Inkster Legends raffle
        
        
          pays for holiday groceries and gifts for 100
        
        
          less fortunate Inkster families.
        
        
          “We give the families about two weeks
        
        
          of groceries, toys for the children and
        
        
          some clothing,” Smiley said. “I give the
        
        
          team at Kroger's on Merriman and Cherry
        
        
          Hill in Westland a shopping list and they
        
        
          shop for 100 families in Inkster, box up
        
        
          everything for us and have it ready to pick
        
        
          up on the Saturday we do the distribu-
        
        
          tion,” Smiley said. “ I really want to thank
        
        
          themanager there andhis team.
        
        
          “I also want to thank the group at
        
        
          Meijer inWestland for their generous sup-
        
        
          port. That is where we purchase the toys
        
        
          and clothes for distribution,” he added.
        
        
          Meijer in Westland donated $500 to help
        
        
          with shopping for the families, Smiley
        
        
          said.
        
        
          Prizes for the annual raffle were
        
        
          awarded during a gathering Dec. 13 at the
        
        
          SheratonHotel inRomulus.
        
        
          “We really need to thank the luxurious
        
        
          Sheraton Hotel for giving us use of the
        
        
          facility for our event,” Smiley said.  “I
        
        
          would also like to thank all the volunteers
        
        
          whomake our event a success and I would
        
        
          be remiss if I failed to thank all the volun-
        
        
          teers who help sell raffle tickets.
        
        
          Especially Nick Jones of Berta Vision for
        
        
          his continued great work with our organi-
        
        
          zation,” Smiley said. He added that the U-
        
        
          Haul manager in Inkster provided storage
        
        
          and a truck for hauling the toys, groceries
        
        
          and clothing.
        
        
          Smiley said that he and the group also
        
        
          appreciated Greg Lewis and his staff at
        
        
          the Booker Dozier Recreation Center for
        
        
          their assistancewith the program.
        
        
          This year the grand prize of two tickets
        
        
          to see the Houston Rockets vs. the Detroit
        
        
          Pistons at Little Caesars Arena Jan. 6, was
        
        
          won by Alice Brown; the second bonus
        
        
          grand prize of a Harlem Globetrotters
        
        
          family pack including four tickets along
        
        
          with an autographed basketball head-
        
        
          bands and wristbands went to W.
        
        
          Singletary.
        
        
          First prize of a weekend stay at the
        
        
          Sheraton Hotel including breakfast went
        
        
          to Dennis Spencer; second prize of four
        
        
          tickets to the world-famous Henry Ford
        
        
          Museum was won by  V. Mitchell while
        
        
          third prize of a birthday party blast for 15
        
        
          at the Romulus Athletic Center went to
        
        
          ClarkBishop.
        
        
          Fourth prize of two racks of lamb from
        
        
          Fairway Meats in Detroit was won by
        
        
          Melvin Wiley; fifth prize of a one-day
        
        
          weekend stay at theMarriott Hotel went to
        
        
          Ernestine Williams and sixth prize, a
        
        
          Garmin GPS navigation system was
        
        
          awarded toLeiaTaylor.
        
        
          Seventh prize, dinner for two at Urban
        
        
          Soul restaurant in Detroit went to
        
        
          S.Vassallo; eighth prize, two vouchers for
        
        
          dinner for two at They Say went to Tyrone
        
        
          Orr and Ernestine Williams; ninth prize,
        
        
          dinner for two at Red Lobster was won by

          card at Ford Garage in Dearborn was won

          Members of the Van Buren Public
        
        
          Schools Board of Education have rated
        
        
          Superintendent of Schools Pete Kudlak as
        
        
          “effective.”
        
        
          The rating encompasses Kudlak's per-
        
        
          formance as the leader of the district from
        
        
          July through December 2017. The board
        
        
          has been in the process of evaluating
        
        
          Kudlak since July.
        
        
          He will be evaluated for his perform-
        
        
          ance from January through December of
        
        
          2018.
        
        
          Discussion of the evaluation continued
        
        
          during a special closed session of the
        
        
          board members prior to the regular meet-
        
        
          ing last week.

          Radio Station 96.3 WDVD visited the Romulus Fire Department Dec. 15 as part of
        
        
          their “Salute to First Responders” program and delivered boxed lunches from
        
        
          HoneyBaked Ham for the crews on duty. They also donated gift cards to buy
        
        
          meals for the crews working on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Welcoming
