The annual Inkster Legends Christmas
Raffle was a “smashing success” despite
some inclement weather, according to
founder anddirectorFredSmiley.
Every year, the Inkster Legends raffle
pays for holiday groceries and gifts for 100
less fortunate Inkster families.
“We give the families about two weeks
of groceries, toys for the children and
some clothing,” Smiley said. “I give the
team at Kroger's on Merriman and Cherry
Hill in Westland a shopping list and they
shop for 100 families in Inkster, box up
everything for us and have it ready to pick
up on the Saturday we do the distribu-
tion,” Smiley said. “ I really want to thank
themanager there andhis team.
“I also want to thank the group at
Meijer inWestland for their generous sup-
port. That is where we purchase the toys
and clothes for distribution,” he added.
Meijer in Westland donated $500 to help
with shopping for the families, Smiley
said.
Prizes for the annual raffle were
awarded during a gathering Dec. 13 at the
SheratonHotel inRomulus.
“We really need to thank the luxurious
Sheraton Hotel for giving us use of the
facility for our event,” Smiley said. “I
would also like to thank all the volunteers
whomake our event a success and I would
be remiss if I failed to thank all the volun-
teers who help sell raffle tickets.
Especially Nick Jones of Berta Vision for
his continued great work with our organi-
zation,” Smiley said. He added that the U-
Haul manager in Inkster provided storage
and a truck for hauling the toys, groceries
and clothing.
Smiley said that he and the group also
appreciated Greg Lewis and his staff at
the Booker Dozier Recreation Center for
their assistancewith the program.
This year the grand prize of two tickets
to see the Houston Rockets vs. the Detroit
Pistons at Little Caesars Arena Jan. 6, was
won by Alice Brown; the second bonus
