Calendar of events
swarming with children, of all sizes and ages
and all playing games that were a variation
of stinky foot only most of themnot quite that
sophisticated. They had, however, invented a
whole new use for seat backs as makeshift
trampolines, and one did have to admire
their inventiveness and their sense of bal-
ance.
No matter where we attempted to sit,
there was the sound of tiny little lungs spew-
ing forth heretofore unclassified viral bacte-
ria into the atmosphere. Every nose was run-
ning and nobody was attempting to catch
anything coming out of any of them. Every
orifice on these short people was expelling
something, liquid, gas, fluids. It was themoth-
er of all Hazmat situations.
We had gone, of course, to see
Life of Pi
, a
version of one of my all-time favorite books.
This, I must say, isn't a book for the squeam-
ish nor is it one for those of rigid religious
beliefs. It has a deep and thought provoking
theme about mankind and God and the
strength and elasticity of the human spirit.
It's a great book and I was eager to see the
movie.
I mean, how was this director going to get
this message across? How was he going to
approach this central theme of Pi finding
God in every religion, not just one, without
offending everybody? How was he going to
get that huge tiger on that boat and keep him
there?
I mean, I really, really wanted to see this
movie.
And I did, after we realized that we had
wandered into the wrong theater and the
opening credits for
The Guardians
, a holiday
cartoon film for children, came on the
screen. Well that and the fact that I was cer-
tain therewas noSanta on that lifeboat.
