New library director is named
Bark For Life planned
PattyBradenhas beennamed as
the new director of the Romulus
PublicLibrary.
Braden joined the city on Sept.
19 as a part-time library director
and will work about 30 hours a
week. She has extensive experi-
ence in municipal and academic
libraries in Michigan, Wisconsin
and Indiana.
Braden succeeds Shelley
Delano, who retired earlier this
year.
Braden's first day on the job
occurred nearly two months to the
day after the grand reopening of
the Romulus Public Library, which
had been closed after a pair of city-
wide millage attempts failed to get
voter approval to fund the facility.
The new director is working
alongsidemembers of the Romulus
Library Board, the Friends of the
Romulus Library, other volunteers
and a fewpart-time aides who have
combined efforts to operate the
library since the reopening.
Braden was youth services
librarian at the neighboring Wayne
Public Library for the past two
years and saw a number of
Romulus residents who turned to
the Wayne Library when the
Romulus Library closed.
“I was very happy to see the
Romulus Library reopen,” Braden
said.
“The Library Board wanted to
bring in a strong leader who would
come in and energize our library
services and offerings, build strong
relationships with our patrons and
volunteers and help us build a
vision for the future of our library,”
said board President Sylvia
Makowski. “We couldn't be more
pleased with what we've seen from
Patty.”
The BBC Striders plan to have a howling
good time next week and collect some funds
for a good causewhile they do.
The group has organized a Bark for Life
from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 29
at Riggs Park in Van Buren Township as a
benefit for TheAmericanCancer Society.
A spokesman explained that this Bark
For Life mini-relay is a full American
Cancer Society fundraising event that will
“honor the care giving qualities of our
canine best friends.”
“Canine companions represent uncondi-
tional love, joy, security and compassion.
The American Cancer Society Bark for Life
is an irresistibleway to take a bite out of can-
cer, smile and make new friends, both
canine andhuman,” she added.
There will be canine-centric activities
including a pet costume contest.
Registration, which is $10, will begin at 10
a.m. and includes a Bark for Life bandana
for dogs. The opening ceremony is planned
for 10:30 a.m. and the PawWalkwill begin at
10:45 a.m.
All proceeds will go to the American
Cancer SocietyRelay for Life of Belleville.
