Main Street to stay
open during Halloween

Clerk warns of long ballot
Citing safety concerns, the Belleville City
Council voted unanimously to keep Main
Street in downtown Belleville open on
Halloween.
Traditionally, trick or treaters are on both
sides of the street throughout the downtown
area from 5 until 7 p.m. Oct. 31. Members of
the Central Business Community had
requested the closure of the street to traffic,
suggesting that it might be safer for costumed
children crossingMain.
That concern was allayed, however, when
police records showed no incidents or
injuries during the past five years of the
event and people in attendance said that
compliance with the caution tape installed
by the city along the sidewalks seemed to
workwell.
Interim Police Chief Hal Berriman told
the council members that a concern was the
effect on parking that would result from
blocking the street. He explained that by
closing the street, motorists would park in
other areas that were less safe and children
in costumes would then be going between
parked cars to get to houses. He suggested
that leaving the street open might be a safer
alternative for everyone involved.
City Manager Diana Kollmeyer also told
the council that to close Main, the city would
have to prohibit parking at noon which
would adversely affect downtownmerchants.
The Belleville Area Chamber of
Commerce directors had also requested that
the street be closed.
The council opted to continue the proce-
dures for the event as in the past with 15
m.p.h. speed limit, use of the police reserve
officers and 12 volunteers from the Citizens
EmergencyResponseTeam.
Mayor Kerreen Conley was on vacation
andnot at themeeting.
Voters in Romulus-and elsewhere-should
expect long lines at the voting booths this
year.
Romulus Clerk Ellen Craig Bragg said
voters will have to handle a four-page ballot
this year, once all the state, county and feder-
al issues are factored in.
“They're estimating that it could take 20,
maybe 30 minutes at the polls, just to vote
that ballot,” she said.
“It's a long ballot.”
The first side of the first pagewill have all
the partisan races, while the second sidewill
have non-partisan elections. The second
sheet will include the State of Michigan pro-
posals on the front and county millages and
proposals on the back.
She said people have been asking for
sample ballots, but they're not yet available.
They shouldbe online thisweek.
“We have posted the language on the bul-
letin board (at city hall), so if voters want to
come in and just see what's there,” she said.
“We do have that posted until we can get the
sample ballots in, so we can provide some
information to the public.”
Hundreds of colorful little dresses, under-
wear and boys' shorts are on the way to
orphanages, churches and schools in Africa
following a Sew-A-Thon last month at Diane
Meriweather'sRomulus home.
Meriweather organized the event as part
of the Little Dresses For Africa effort, invit-
ing friends and family to her home for the
Saturday event. Of the 60women she invited,
10 even brought their own portable sewing
machines to help with the effort. One of her
guests traveled all the way fromAtlanta, GA.
Meriwether included instructions for mak-
ing the “pillowcase dresses” in the invita-
tions and had shopped for supplies prior to
the event. She also made nearly 200 dresses
herself before the 8-hour sew-a-thon took
place.
Those non-seamstresses who attended
were put to work cutting fabric, threading
needles and ironing trims and materials.
The women even divided into teams to see
which could complete one of the dresses the
fastest.
The winners did it in less than 10 min-
utes.
The women also packed and boxed the
clothing for shipment toAfrica.
Little Dresses for Africa is a registered
501 c 3 non-profit group.
Diane Meriweather hosted a group of amateur seamstresses at her Romulus home last
month to help make clothing for the Little Dresses for Africa charity.
Women brought their own portable sewing machines to help with the Sew A Thon for the
Little Dresses For Africa effort hosted by Diane Meriweather last month.
