NKSTER
Diabetes presentation workshops scheduled in city
The
National
Kidney
Foundation of Michigan is bringing
the National Diabetes Prevention
Program to Inkster. The foundation
will host a 16-week educational
series from 6-7 p.m. on Tuesdays
beginning Oct. 23 at the Western
Wayne Family Health Center, locat-
ed at 2500 Hamlin Court. To qualify
for the program, participants must
be overweight and at high risk for
developing diabetes, or overweight
and have been diagnosed by a
physician as someone with predia-
betes.
Diabetes is the leading cause of
kidney failure, causing more than
40 percent of all kidney failure
cases. However, type 2 diabetes can
be prevented or delayed with a
healthy lifestyle. In Michigan, it is
estimated that over 2.5 million
adults have prediabetes.
The workshops are designed to
help those at high risk for develop-
ing type 2 diabetes adopt andmain-
tain a healthy lifestyle by eating
right, increasing physical activity,
and losing a modest amount of
weight, a program spokesperson
said. In a classroom setting, a
trained lifestyle coach facilitates a
small group of participants in
learning about behavior changes
over 16 one-hour sessions. Topics
include healthier eating, getting
started with physical activity, over-
coming stress, staying motivated,
and more, she added. After the ini-
tial 16 core sessions, participants
meet monthly for additional sup-
port to help maintain their
progress.
In order to participate in the
program, a doctor determines the
level of risk through a blood test
withone of the following results:
• Fasting plasma glucose
between 100-125mg/d
• A1c between 5.7 and 6.4 per-
cent
• 2-hour plasma glucose
between 140 to 199mg/dl
In addition, a combination of
risk factors such as family history,
overweight, gestational diabetes,
and elevated cholesterol may also
put individuals at risk.
There is no cost to participate in
thisworkshop.
