Train collision kills 2 at crossing
Charities benefit from
Blues, Brews and BBQ
Two people were killed when
an Amtrak train plowed into
their vehicle at the Michigan
Avenue and Venoy Road crossing
lastWednesday night.
While the names of the pair
were not released by police at
press time, they were identified
as 57- and 58-year old Romulus
residents.
The crash took place at about
10:40 p.m. when the pickup truck
in which the two were traveling
was struck broadside by the train.
Initial reports indicated that the
driver of the vehicle had attempt-
ed to go around the barrier gates
that blocked the crossing.
According to Amtrak, the
train, carrying 90 passengers, was
traveling to Pontiac from
Chicago.
No injuries to anyone on the
trainwere reported.
The train was delayed for
about three hours at the scene of
the crash, which remains under
investigation by both the Wayne
Police Department and the
MichiganStatePolice.
It was another record breaking year for
the 6thAnnual Blues, Brews andBBQ fes-
tival inWestland.
According to Mayor William Wild,
15,000 people visited Central City Park
during the two-day event and about 8,000
people attended the fireworks show cele-
brating the 50th anniversary of the city
Saturday.
Wild said the event generated $20,000
for 10 local non-profit organizations, put-
ting the total earned by the event for com-
munity organizations at more than
$150,000 to date in the past six years.
Checks to the volunteer civic groups
were presented during the regular meet-
ing of the city council last week.
Wild said that Blues, Brews and BBQ
also attracted attendees from Westland
and surrounding communities, as well as
a recordnumber of sponsors.
“I want to thank all of our volunteers,
the participating restaurants, our spon-
sors and the performers for another
remarkable event,” saidWild. “Everything
was bigger and better than ever this year
in honor of the city's 50th anniversary and
it really took all hands on deck to pull off
this incredible summer event.”
The 10 non-profits receiving checks
were: the Westland Chamber of
Commerce, Goodfellows, Lions Club, the
Westland Citivans, Rotary, The Westland
Community Foundation, Jaycees, Grange,
the Westland Historical Commission and
WarmHearts.
The local groups each provided volun-
teer manpower at the event including
serving as greeters, grounds crew, and ID
checkers, among a variety of other roles in
an effort to make the event cost neutral to
the city.
Attendees were treated some of the
best BBQ in Michigan, Wild said, and
packed the house for Blues legends, such
as Lil' Ed and the Blues Imperials and
ThornettaDavis.
“We even brought back Westland's own
country music icon and American Idol
finalist Josh Gracin,” he added. “And now
the countdown begins for next year's
event.”

The Westland H20 Spray Zone, scheduled to close after Labor Day weekend, will
remain open and will be free through the month of September on weekends,
weather permitting. The concession stand will be closed until next summer, but
bathrooms will remain accessible to the public on days that the splash pad is open
from noon until 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.
