A.M. Rotary Club goes ‘Green’ during festival dinner
To be diagnosed with diabetes is
life changing and frightening. To be
diagnosedwith diabetes at the same
time as your child is unimaginable.
For Chris Schachern and his
daughter, Casey, the reality of this
double diagnosis was life changing.
Schachern was diagnosed with type
II diabetes months before his 4-
year-old daughter, Casey, was diag-
nosedwith type I diabetes. That was
eight years ago, and the entire
Schachern family has stood out in
the fight against diabetes ever since.
The Schachern family will join
more than 3,500 participants and
volunteers to take part in the Stop
Diabetes® movement by participat-
ing in the American Diabetes
Association national event, Step
Out: Walk to Stop Diabetes. The
event will take place Sept.15 at The
Detroit Zoo inRoyal Oak. Every dol-
lar raised through Step Out plays an
important role in supporting the
Association's mission: to prevent
and cure diabetes and to improve
the lives of all people affected by
diabetes.
The Schachern family shines in
their commitment to fight diabetes
as the 2012 American Diabetes
Association's Red Strider Family
Ambassadors. The family collected
more than $5,000 last year and the
'Schachern Diabetes Walk Team' is
working hard to raise this year's
$5,000 goal.
Casey's Schachern's, brother,
Tyler, understands at 7 that diabetes
affects the whole family, and knows
that, "It's not fun to check your
blood, and really scary when you
are low". He's doing his part in the
battle against diabetes, recently
joining his sister to speak at a Step
Out event at Johnson Controls, a
sponsor of the event in Plymouth,
where both his dad andmom, Tracy
Schachern, work.
The Schachern family partici-
pates in Step Out because diabetes
is a devastating disease that no indi-
vidual should have to face alone,
they said. With more than over one
million people in Michigan living
with diabetes, the Schachern family
is not the only family in the
Northville area affected by this dis-
ease.

The American Diabetes
Association funds research to pre-
vent, cure and manage diabetes;
delivers services to hundreds of
communities; provides objective
and credible information; and gives
voice to those denied their rights
because of diabetes. Founded in
1940, the mission of the association
is to prevent and cure diabetes and
to improve the lives of all people
affected by diabetes, a spokesper-
son said.

Yes, they've 'gone green' but no,
that doesn't apply to the pasta din-
ners members of the Rotary Club of
Plymouth A.M. will be dishing up in
Kellogg Park Sept. 8 during the 57th
PlymouthFall Festival this year.
This is the seventh year the club
has sold their famous all-you-can-
eat pasta from a tent in the north-
east corner of Kellogg Park. Nomat-
ter the weather, rain or shine, the
members are there serving the din-
ners from 4 until 8 p.m. on Saturday
of the festival.
This year, according to Kate
Rosevear, the club has opted to use
biodegradeable cartons, cups, din-
ing utensils and carriers. Even the
plastic water glasses will dissolve in
the ground in 48 hours of less, she
said.
Also new this year, children 12
and younger eat free when accom-
panied by an adult. Dinner tickets
for adults are $7.50 if purchased in
advance from any member of the
morning Rotary Club at www.ply-
mouthrotaryam.org or by calling
(734) 455-5810. Tickets will also be
available at the Fall Fest dinner
ticket booth at Penniman and Main
Street during the festival. Adult tick-
ets are $9 if purchased the day of
the event. Tickets will also be avail-
able at the dinner tent on Saturday
fromnoonuntil they close.
It may be called the spaghetti
dinner, but this year they will be
serving mostaciolli with a choice of
meat or marinara sauce made by
Dago Joe's Old School Gourmet
Italian Food, the same company
that made the wildly popular sauce
served last year, Rosevear said. In
addition, dinner includes a tossed
salad with Italian dressing, garlic
bread, a large chocolate chip cook-
ie, a 16-ounce bottle of spring water
and all the coffee or tea one can
drink.
This year, proceeds from the din-
ner will be used to provide scholar-
ships for youngsters who have over-
come major challenges in order to
graduate fromhigh school and addi-
tional special needs equipment for
youngsters at Tanger Center. The
dinner will also help fund the
Annual Senior Christmas Dinner
for 200 seniors and Rotary Shelter
Boxes for Emergency Relief in
places like Haiti and Pakistan,
Rosevear said.
The morning Rotary Club focus-
es attention and the majority of
fund raising efforts on assistance
programs for seniors and for youth
and children in the Plymouth-
Canton community, especially those
with physical limitations and other
challenges. Early in the existence of
themorning club, members adopted
the 200 special needs youngsters
and teachers at Tanger School as
the ongoing beneficiaries of their
efforts.
Proceeds from previous years at
the Fall Festival Spaghetti Dinner
went to help in the construction of
The Miracle League of Plymouth
baseball field, which is now a reali-
ty. The Miracle League field now
serves as a playground for young-
sters in wheelchairs, on crutches or
with other mobility issues and for
those with visual and hearing
impairments, autism and other spe-
cial needs.
The AM. Rotary Club has
become a permanent fixture at the
Fall Festival, Rosevear said, and the
dinner is one of the most important
means of raising awareness about
and funding for the many communi-
ty-focused and international Peace
Through Service projects and
undertakings.
For more information about
Plymouth Rotary A.M., contact
Rosevear at (734) 455-5810.
The Schachern family enjoys an outing at Comerica Park. The whole
family will participate as a team in the upcoming Step Out fundraiser to
help fund diabetes research.
