For the first time in 45 years, historic
homes in the City of Northville will be
studied and evaluated for their signifi-
cance in the community.
A grant from the State Historic
Preservation Office will fund part of the
survey while the federal government and
the City of Northville will share in the cost
of evaluating the more than 300 homes in
the 144-acre historic district. The survey
will be managed by Carlisle Wortman
Associates principal Sally Elmiger who
noted that the study would be a good
resource for the Historic District
Commission members and property own-
ers.
State and federal agencies dedicated to
historic preservation will also receive a
copy of the anticipated report which will
include color photos as well as survey
data and summary reports. The informa-
tion will also be available on the City of
Northvillewebsite, officials said.
The survey will provide needed infor-
mation for the members of the Historic
District Commission who are charged
with approving petitions for changes to
structures in the district. The comprehen-
sive survey will help commissioners
understand building components and the
historical significance of architectural fea-
tures.
The study should also help homeown-
ers understand the historic importance of
some of the features of their homes and
the need for preserving those elements of
the past, officials said.
City officials are currently accepting
applications for a historical architect to
help perform the survey and evaluation.
Currently, prior to changes to homes in the
historic district, owners must complete an
application which includes the date of
construction of the home, the architectur-
al style, historic photos, the name of the
original owner, builder developer and the
timeline for any construction. Owners also
need to provide a detailed description of
the building materials relevant to the
home and historic information such as
notable residents, whether the home is a
recognized landmark or important site
and any other historic attributes.
Qualified architects or building histori-
ans can find the Request For Proposal
formon the on the Northville city website.
Proposals will be accepted until noon
Sept. 5.
Businesses throughout the
City of Inkster have been visited
by city inspectors during the
past few weeks as part of the
annual renewal of business
licenses.
Businesses received a letter
from Mayor Byron H. Nolen in
June, notifying them that the
license renewal process
includes the inspection of the
business premises as part of a
new process adopted in the city
July 1. The new inspection will
result in the issuance of a
Certificate of Compliance which
will be necessary to renew busi-
ness licenses.
Annual inspections of com-
mercial property are required
by the 2015 International
Property Maintenance Code and
by city ordinance, Nolen told
business owners.
"Additionally, this inspection
is important in order to ensure
that public health and safety
standards are maintained," he
noted inhis letter.
The mayor cautioned busi-
ness owners that failing to renew
business licenses puts them in
violation of a city ordinance
which could then require them
to appear in court for operating
without a license in the city.
The cost of the annual inspec-
tion is $190 per property address
and inspectors from the city
building department will inspect
the property for compliance
with all codes and ordinances.
Any noted violations must be
corrected prior to the issuance
of the certificate of compliance.
Once a business owner has
received their certificate, they
can take it to the office of the city
clerk to renew their license.
This must be done prior to the
Dec. 31 deadline, Nolen cau-
tioned.
"It is best not to wait for the
business license deadline to
schedule your annual inspection
as it may take some time to
address any violations that may
be noted," Nolen cautioned busi-
ness owners.
For more information about
the annual inspections, contact
the building department at (313)
563-7716. For licensing informa-
tion, contact the office of the city
clerk at (313) 563-9770.
Wayne County Commissioner Glenn S. Anderson, left, Inkster Mayor Byron Nolen,
Wayne County Executive Warren Evans and Inkster Mayor Pro-Tem Timothy Williams
are all smiles at the recent senior picnic.
Wayne County Executive Warren Evans

Evans thanked the group for all the sup-
port the Inkster commission provides for
the Wayne County Home Delivered Meals
Program (Meals on Wheels). The Inkster

and recently purchased two cargo vans
that are used for home delivery of meals to
Inkster seniors. The servicewasmade pos-
sible by the dedicatedmillage approved by
voters to support senior services in Inkster.
The Saints, Inc. also assist in the program
anddeliver a routeweekdays.
The Commission on Aging also pur-
chased a vehicle that is used as a shuttle
bus to provide transportation between sen-
iors in their homes and the Dozier
Recreation Complex. This allows resi-
dents with no transportation to be a part of
the programming at recreation center
Wednesdays, Thursdays andFridays.
More than 100 seniors attended the
annual picnic Aug. 4 at Wheatley Park,
noted Commission on Aging Program
DirectorDeniseChampagne.
