A lightning strike is believed to have
been the cause of a devastating home fire
earlyMondaymorning.
According to the Canton Public Safety
Department, a 911 call was received at
about 1:15 a.m. Monday from a homeown-
er in the 8000 block of TilburyCourt.
First responding fire crews found the
garage and roof of the home fully
engulfed by fire when they arrived on the
scene, according to fire department
reports. Firefighters, using several hand
lines and two aerial ladder trucks,
worked for several hours to extinguish the
fire.
The occupants of the home were alert-
ed of the fire by their second floor smoke
detectors and everyone in the home was
able to exit the structure without injury.
The homeowner told responding firefight-
ers that he believed his house was struck
by lightning at approximately 11:15 p.m.,
causing thehome to lose partial power.
“Any resident whose home is struck by
lightning during a storm is advised to con-
tact the Canton Fire Department,” said
Fire Chief Joshua Meier. “Firefighters
will check the structure for possible smol-
dering or fire not initially visible to the
resident witha thermal imaging camera.”
The 3,500 square foot home suffered
extensive damage as a result of the fire.
