A SSOCIATED N EWSPAPERS OF M ICHIGAN P AGE 3 A UGUST 4, 2011 B ELLEVILLE - C ANTON - R OMULUS

The Ball Road Tabernacle Church is once again doing its part in the community-andbeyond. The church on Ball Road in Romulus is hosting a fundraiser in September to generate funds for the needy and provide help for the Niche for the Needy Food Bank and the Taylor Fish and Loaves organization. It will take place on Sept. 10.

“Hunger hurts. People are Romulus and the downriver area are hurting, not just financially, but their stomachs aren't full,” said Alan Richards, promotions director for the church. “There's not enough food to go around, they have to pay prescription costs, they have to pay

unexpected bills, and there's no money left to put food on the table.” Richards said he thought the church would be a good place to help. For the past 75 years, the organization has a history of help-ing the community, providing chari-table help for hundreds of people throughout the area. For the past six years, they've done a Thanksgiving fooddrive, aswell. The Patriots Ride for Hunger Freedom Festival will be another way to give back.

“It's all about helping families in need, not just with food, but offering themresources where they can find help for certain needs,” said Richard, who is aRomulus resident

who co-founded www.lookingto-helpyou.com, which helps families throughout theworld.

“Hunger has got to stop,” said Richards. “The only way we can stop it is through fundraisers like this, where churches and the city can work together to make our city better.”

He said he expects the festival to bring people in from surrounding

communities, too. It will take place on the church grounds. It will include a salute to veterans, with veterans from World War II to the conflict in Afghanistan in atten-dance, one of whom won a presi-dential award for valor.

“This is not a religious festival; it's not about trying to get the lost saved. That's not our job at this festi-val,” saidRichards. “We're honoring

vets, we're honoring people that are the working poor that are coming to have a good time with their family and we're raising resources to help those families in need. That's what this is all about. It's a community outreach effort.”

The council unanimously approved a permit for the event last week.

“I think it's remarkable what you're doing,” said Councilman WilliamWadsworth.

Richards said they will need vol-unteers for the event, too. For more information, call the church at (734) 722-9638. For information on the church, visit http://ballroadtaberna-cle.webs.com/.
