Tiny Tot Olympics set for this Saturday
It's Shark Week in Canton
Township.
Yep. Canton Leisure Services
is celebrating Shark Week by
offering shark-related events and
activities fromJuly 31 toAug. 9.
By hosting shark-inspired con-
certs, recreation opportunities
and a movie night during the
week of the Discovery Channel's
popular Shark Week program-
ming, Canton Leisure Services
aims to give families a chance to
make a big splashof summer fun.
“In celebration of this sum-
mertime tradition and this pop
culture phenomenon, we just
had to find a way to be a part of
the fun,” said Jennifer
Provenzano,
Recreation
Coordinator. “No longer confined
to the safety of our living room
televisions, we hope folks will
stay tuned as special shark-
inspired fun ripples and splash-
es through many of our camps,
programs and events all week
long.”
Shark Week in Canton will
begin at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, July
31 with a free concert at the
Heritage Park Amphitheater by
oldies group Moose and Da
Sharks. Kids will have a chance
to make their own shark masks
and take a cut-out “picturewith a
shark” (no real sharks involved).
The fun continues from 9 a.m.
until 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 3 at the
Canton Farmers Market at
Preservation Park. Kids can
“take a bite” out of their Sunday
by taking part in a themed “shark
food” activity at themarket.
Kids will have another oppor-
tunity to dive in to shark-related
crafts and activities from 6:30-8
p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 6 when the
School House Rock summer con-
cert series makes a stop at
Dodson Elementary School.
Classic rock band The Fun Guys
will be entertaining at a free con-
cert open to the public.
The whole family will enjoy a
free outdoor movie night begin-
ning at 7:30 Thursday, Aug. 7 at
the Heritage Park Amphitheater.
The movie Soul Surfer (rated
PG) will be shown on the big
screen at dusk.
At the end of Shark Week, be
sure to enter the Cardboard Boat
Race, from 3:30-5:30 p.m.
Saturday, Aug. 9 at Summit on
the Park Aquatic Center. Bring a
boat built from just cardboard
and duct tape to race for prizes -
and to stay afloat above “shark-
infested” waters. Call (734) 394-
5460 for details.
In addition to these events,
Canton Leisure Services will be
celebrating sharks all through
theweek.
Stop by the Summit Lobby
during the week for a cut-out
photo opportunity with a shark,
and enjoy a “shark-free zone”
during open swim at the Summit
AquaticCenter.

Northville Township voters
will be asked to approve a dedi-
cated millage of 1.550 during
the Aug. 5 election. Along with
the renewal of the existing
5.575 mills, voters will be asked
to approve a 7-year levy of up to
1.250 mills to support and fund
public safety operations in the
township and 0.3 mills to sup-
port parks, recreation, senior
and youth assistance opera-
tions in the township..
Tax bills in the township
could increase up to $1.55 per
$1,000 of the taxable value of
homes and property, according
to township officials. The actual
amount will vary based on the
specific taxable value. For
example, a homeowner with a
taxable value of $100,000 would
see an increase of $155.
Officials said the request
was due to a decline in taxable
value in the township which
began in 2008. One of the
largest sources of revenue for
the township is property taxes,
officials said and the value in
Northville Township has seen a
decrease of 13.8 percent from
2007 through 2013. The loss in
taxable value has resulted in a
$1.5 million reduction in prop-
erty tax revenue to fund public
safety programs and an overall
loss to the township of $2.1 mil-
lion to fund the 2014 fiscal year,
officials said.
In 2010, the board of trustees
did not ask voters for a tax
increase to cover declining tax
revenues but opted to use funds
in reserve and reallocated tax
funds. Because of declining
property tax revenues, the
township Public Safety Fund is
expected to deplete these
reserves by 2015 and Shared
Services by 2018.
The overall workforce in the
township has been reduced by
15 full time positions or 12 per-
cent since 2008, according to
the township website. The 2014
budget plan maintains staffing
at this reduced level with 70
percent of the workforce dedi-
cated to public safety opera-
tions. Further cuts are not pos-
sible without critically impact-
ing services including the
potential need to diminish
some important services entire-
ly, according to township
administrators.
The polls will be open from7
a.m. until 8 p.m. in the township
onAug. 5.
Canton Leisure Services Will host the
annual Tiny Tot Olympics for children 2-6
years of age from 10:30 a.m. until noon,
Saturday, Aug. 2. This gold medal event
will take place at the Heritage Park
Amphitheater, located behind the Canton
Administration Building at 1150 S.
CantonCenterRoad.
This family-friendly event will bring
the Olympic spirit to life again in Canton,
offering visions of gold, silver and bronze
medals, noted Jennifer Collins, Canton
Leisure Services preschool instructor.
The games will include a variety of
events, including: an obstacle course, bas-
ketball shoot, T-ball, gymnastics and
more.
“This event was designed to encourage
preschool children to join us for plenty of
fun in the sun and a chance to get outside
and experience a variety of different
sports at their own ability level,” said
Collins. “Here parents can watch and
cheer on their little athletes while
encouraging physical fitness.”
Shoolhouse Montessori will also be
onsite offering a special drawing for a
chance for one lucky participant to win a
free bike at the end of the event. In addi-
tion, participants can also enjoy live
music aswell as fun in the bounce house.
Every child who participates will be
awarded a gold medal and will be recog-
nized as an outstanding competitor. No
pre-registration is required. Participant
fee is $3 per child to be paid in cash on
the day of event. Parents are encouraged
to bring along their cameras.
