Members of the Westland City Council
approved a motion for “For Sale” signs to
be placed on the Hawthorne Valley site,
located on the east side of Merriman,
northofWarrenRoad.
The City of Westland currently owns
14.75 acres of the overall 57 acre site that
was once the Hawthorne Valley Golf
Course and Restaurant, which closed in
2011. Of the 14.75 acres that are under the
control of the city, approximately 5 acres
are zoned commercial, the portion of the
property that contains the restaurant and
parking lot, while the remaining acreage
is zoned single family residential.
“The City of Westland is interested in
marketing the property to facilitate a long-
term sustainable development that would
be compatible with the surrounding area
and that would act as a catalyst for future
development,” commented Mayor
WilliamWild.
supportedbyEqualityMichigan.
“In the absence of state action to ban
anti-LGBTQ discrimination in Michigan,
local leadership has been essential to
ensuring that our communities are wel-
coming to everyone, regardless of their
sexual orientation and gender identity,”
commented Nathan Triplett, director of
public policy and political action at
Equality Michigan. “Equality Michigan
commends Mayor Wild and the Westland
City Council for their pro-equality leader-
ship. A comprehensive nondiscrimination
ordinance sends a powerful, positive mes-
sage about the values and priorities of
Westland. This ordinance will make
Westland a more attractive community in
which to live, work, raise a family, and
start a business.”
“Westland, as Michigan's first commu-
nity to sign the Charter for Compassion, is
a welcoming city and we will always wel-
come people fromall walks of life andwill
not tolerate discrimination based on any
factors,” commented Wild. “This new
ordinancewill protect the rights of all cur-
rent and future Westland residents and
employees and is proof of our commit-
ment towards total equality.”
“Thank youWestlandMayorWilliamR.
Wild and Westland City Council for adopt-
ing changes to theWestland ordinances to
add sexual orientation and gender identi-
ty to Westland's non discrimination civil
rights,” commented 58-year Westland resi-
dent Hank Johnson. “Proud of my city
leadership tonight.”
“We had more than 30 vendors on site
talking about safety. That's a huge thing for
me,” Gall said. “We're reaching out to the
community to promote safety; that's why
we'rehere.”
The event also served to recognize the
hospital's 60th anniversary. Beaumont,
Wayne opened through the Peoples
Community Hospital Authority as
Oakwood Hospital in November 1957.
During the event last week, Wayne Mayor
Susan Rowe thanked the hospital and
staff for their long record of serving the
community; the hospital also received a
resolution of support from the Wayne
County Commission, courtesy of former
Wayne Mayor and current County
Commissioner Al Haidous, and a letter of
congratulations from Congressman John
Conyers.
“Beaumont Hospital, Wayne has long
been a vital part of our community,” said
Rowe, who credited the hospital for sav-
ing her husband's life several years ago.
“We're grateful to have such a high-
quality facility right here in our home
town.”
