First responders score big in charity game
The scoreboard may have indicated their defeat, but
the Romulus Police and Fire department players count
the latest fundraising effort as a big win.
The public safety personnel, along with a few players
from the Romulus High School girls' basketball team,
generated $1,200 from a recent charity basketball game
to help fund the annual holiday Shop With A Cop pro-
gram. In addition to the game, the event included a raf-
fle to become one of several city officials for a day, a
chance to win a Nintendo Switch and several donated
gift baskets.
Opponents of the police and fire teams were players
from Royalty Empowerment, a program described on
the group website as an effort to encourage youth to
excel from poverty and help motivate others to over-
come obstacles in their environment. The mission of the
organization is to bridge the gap between law enforce-
ment in urban and underserved communities, officials
said.
Explaining the 44-48 score, Romulus police posted an
explanation of the loss on the department Facebook
page.
“The first responders gave a valiant effort but lost 44-
48 to a worthy opponent, (editor's note - the sun was in
