Navy veteran awarded service
medals 68-years after discharge
International nonprofit moves into Inkster
Tickets on sale for 21st Annual Northville Garden Walk
When retired Northville barber and vet-
eran Tom Arbanas disembarked the USS
Walker in 1945, he had just returned from 80
days at sea and heavy combat in Okinawa.
His Navy ship had sustained persistent
Japanese kamikaze attacks and the young
18-year-old Petty Officer Third Class was
ready for discharge.
All Arbanas could think about was getting
home.
Now 68 years later, the 86-year-old World
War II veteran is being recognized for his
bravery and courage during his military
service.
Last Friday, U.S. District Veterans Liaison
Joe Salvia, representing Congressman Kerry
Bentivolio, R-11th District, along with
Commander Steve Frazer and Past
Commander Lyle Avery of VFW Northville
Post 4012 presented Arbanas with service
medals and ribbons he missed on that
November day he was discharged in San
Diego.
“I didn't think about much it,” said
Arbanas who lives in Kings Mill in
Northville along with his wife of 64 years,
Katherine.
“I didn't have enough time to get the
medals,” Arbanas said. He trained as a bar-
ber after leaving the Navy and owned his
own shop on Dunlap Street in Northville
from1986 through 1992.
When Frazer got a call from Washington,
D.C. regarding Arbanas' service, he went to
work and contacted special emissary Salvia,
from the AMVETS Commerce District Office
to help get the paperwork in place so
Arbanas, who served in theAsiaPacific cam-
paign and Pearl Harbor, would receive his
medals.
Arbanas received three medals for his
service; American Campaign, Asiatic Pacific
Campaign and theVictoryMedal.
The
former
Livernois
Engineering building in Inkster will
soonhave newowners.
Zaman International, a nonprofit
organizationwith a 10-year record of
service to marginalized women and
children, has closed on the purchase
of the 40,500 square-foot building
that will serve as the new company
headquarters and center of opera-
tions.
The building, located at 26091
Trowbridge St., south of Michigan
Avenue and west of Beech Daly, will
allowZaman to consolidate six oper-
ating locations, including the cur-
rent Dearborn headquarters office,
into one facility, according to a com-
pany spokesperson. The facility will
be known as Zaman International's
HopeForHumanity Center.
In addition to the Zaman head-
quarters, the Hope For Humanity
Center will include space for the
organizations food bank, vocational
training, clothing recycling and dis-
tribution, and furniture donation
programs. It enables the organiza-
tion to have the space to grow its
programs for women and children
as well as add educational pro-
grams, while responding to new
needs as they emerge, the
spokesperson continued.
"The Hope For Humanity Center
includes everything Zaman offers
under one roof and is on a bus line,
close to the members of our commu-
nity who are most in need of
Zaman's services," said Najah Bazzy,
Zaman International executive
director, a trans-cultural nurse who
founded the organization in 2004.
"This location allows us to be as cost-
effective as possible and convenient
for the people we serve and the vol-
unteers who help our organization
fulfill itsmission every day."
The purchase includes an 18,000
square foot parking lot across the
street from themain building, which
could eventually be used for future
expansion. The organization is cur-
rently raising funds for a renovation
of the building.
Members of the Country
Garden Club of Northville are

Garden Walk from 9 a.m. until 4
p.m.Wednesday, July 9.

vate gardens in and around

price are a garden market, live

ments, all in a 19th century village
setting at the historic Mill Race
Village, 215 Griswold St. in down-
townNorthville.
