entertainment will feature Worst Case
Scenario, performing both hits and original
material from 1:30-2:30 p.m.; hometown
favorites, TwentyFourSeven, will pump up
the crowds with their high energy pop/rock
sound at 4:45 p.m.; The Candy Band, a punk
rock band designed specifically to appeal to
children will perform from 7-8 p.m. Friday
night's pre-movie music and games will be
provided by Ms. Carissa, with the Movie
Under the Stars, featuring “Cloudy with a
Chance of Meatballs 2” rated PG, on the big
screen at dusk.
The Annual Spaghetti Dinner is planned
from 5 p.m. - 9 p.m. Friday, while supplies
last, with proceeds from the dinner going to
the Canton Firefighter Charity Foundation
Local 2289. In addition, the America's Most
Wanted Car Show is back with a Kick-Off
Registration Party that will take place from 5
- 8 p.m.
Take a Walk on the Wild Side both Friday
and Saturday and enjoy a petting farm,
camel rides, exotic animal exhibits, plus a
bird encounter. Merchandise from local arti-
sans, crafters, businesses and vendors will be
on display around the large pond from1 p.m.
until duskFriday and from11 a.m. until dusk
Saturday.
Be amazed and be amused as the Detroit
Circus performs at 2 p.m.; 3 p.m.; 4 p.m. and
5:30 p.m. near the Canton LIVE! Stage on
both Friday and Saturday. These dazzling
circus style performers specialize in: high
flying aerial antics on fabric trapeze and
lyra; fire dancing and eating; stilt walking
and stilt acrobatics; contortion juggling; feats
of mind-bending strength, acrobalance as
well as a variety of circus sideshow.
Saturday highlights include a 7-11 a.m.
Pancake Breakfast, sponsored by the Canton
Lions Club in the Heritage Park North
Pavilion. Canton Leisure Services is again
joining forces with Running Fit to host the
3rd annual Liberty Run, including 5K, 10K,
and One Mile events. Participants are
encouraged to register at www.cantonliber-
tyrun.com and run, walk, or stroll in these
events. Participants will also receive finish-
ermedals, aswell as a raceT-Shirt. Plus, run-
ning theme-awards will be handed out to the
best stars and stripes running outfits, as well
as the best jorts (jean shorts).
Other Saturday entertainment highlights,
include: the International Festival's cultural
performances and displays at the
Amphitheater Stage from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m.,
presented by the Canton Commission for
Culture, Arts and Heritage. Featured cul-
tures from around the world, include:
Indian, Chinese, Sri Lankan, andmore! Don't
miss the Michigan Taiko Center's perform-
ance at 6:30 p.m., featuring some of the
biggest/loudest drums Liberty Fest has ever
seen! Plus, Radio Disney Detroit Radio
Crew, powered byHAPwill be onsite from11
a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday at the Canton
LIVE! Stage.
Other Saturday entertainment highlights
on the Canton LIVE! Stage, include: Kelsey
RoseYoung, a local singer and dancer is sure
to get you out of your seats and rockin' from3
- 3:30 p.m.; Phoenix Theory will take listen-
ers to new heights of musical entertainment
with their renditions of classic rock hits from
4:30-6:30 p.m.; The Square Pegz are bringing
the 80s back. Enjoy the most wicked 80s pop
band around from8-10 p.m.
Another must-see performance includes
Tony Lucca. If you're a fan of NBC's hit show,
“The Voice,” or just a really big fan of great
music, be sure to catch former “TeamAdam”
Finalist, and Michigan-Native, Tony Lucca.
The show begins at 8:15 p.m. just before the
fireworks.

Perfection
Three eighth-grade students at Canton Charter Academy received perfect composite
scores on the ACT Explore assessment. The ACT Explore is designed to help students
identify strengths and areas of improvement in eighth and ninth grade as they start to
prepare for the ACT exam commonly used for college admittance. Krupa Patel (left),
Ramya Chiguraupati (center), and Maria Irimie (right) achieved the perfect score of 25,
a feat less than 1 percent of students nationally achieve this high academic distinction.
“I am not surprised by the results of the ACT Explore for these three students,” said
Principal Janelle Magyar. “The results show the hard work they are putting into the
classroom every day. I am very proud of their accomplishment.”

International celebration takes place Saturday
Veteran officer to retire
The Canton Liberty Fest will con-
tinue the popular tradition of host-
ing an International Festival during
the highly-anticipated summer com-
munity event. A variety of cultures
from around the world will be show-
cased from 11 a.m. - 6 p.m. on
Saturday, June 14, at the Heritage
ParkAmphitheater.
Festival-goers are encouraged to
stop by the amphitheater stage on
Saturday to enjoy music and dance
that communicates across cultural
and linguistic barriers from coun-
tries across the globe, including:
Albania; China; India; Italy; Sri
Lanka; Spain; the United States of
America; Tahiti; New Zealand;
SouthKorean andPolynesia.
“Our International Festival is a
great opportunity for audiencemem-
bers to experience music and dance
from around the globe at one loca-
tion,” said Canton Arts Coordinator
Jennifer Tobin. “Audiences will be
delighted as the stage comes alive
with colorful costuming, exotic
instruments and stirring rhythms
when these talented individuals
share their heritage and some tradi-
tions that date back centuries.”
Performers expected to take the
stage, include Soprano Corinthia
Sims and Tenors Tom Cilluffo and
Dorian Dillard presented by the
Verdi Opera Theatre of Michigan.
These talented singers will perform
from 1-1:30 p.m. Soprano Corinthia
Sims is currently attending Claflin
University in Orangeburg, SC and is
a previous first place winner in the
vocal classical division of the
NAACP ACT-SO Competition. In
addition, Sims was also the first
place winner of the George Shirley
African-American Art Song and
Operatic Aria Competition in 2011.
Tenor Tom Cilluffo is currently a
junior vocal performance major
studying at the University of
Michigan and has been a part of
more than 45 productions. Tenor
Dorian Dillard is a senior music
education major at Claflin
University, in Orangeburg, SC and
most recently won the District
National Association of Teachers of
Singing Auditions, advancing to
regionals.

This year's performances at the
International Festival are appropri-
ate for children, adults, seniors, and
students. More than a dozen acts are
scheduled to appear to celebrate a
wide range of cultural offerings at
the Heritage Park Amphitheater.
This global celebration will also
include cultural exhibits on display
featuring worldly and exotic items
for sale creating a festive interna-
tional atmosphere.
Canton Leisure Services is host-
ing three action-packed days of fami-
ly fun from June 12 - 14 in beautiful
Heritage Park, located adjacent to
the Canton Administration Building,
west of Canton Center Road
between Cherry Hill Road and
Summit Parkway.

Police Lt. Robert Smedley is set to retire
at the end of themonth with 23-years of serv-
ice to theCanton community.
Smedley was hired by the department in
1991 as a patrol officer, following a 2-year
career as a police officer with the City of
Detroit. He was promoted to the rank of ser-
geant in 2009 and lieutenant in January of
this year. Smedley earned his bachelor's
degree from Adrian College and his master's
degree in Public Administration from
Eastern Michigan University. He is also a
graduate of Eastern Michigan University's
PoliceStaff andCommandSchool.
Smedley has been active in numerous
special units throughout his career including
assignments as a detective in the Western-
Wayne Criminal Investigations unit and the
department's Detective Bureau. He also
served on the department Honor Guard, and
as an instructor of the TEAM (Teaching,
Educating
and
Mentoring) program
taught in the ele-
mentary schools.
Smedley was also
assigned as a School
Resource Officer at
the
Plymouth-
Canton Educational
Park for a 3-year
period.
"Lt. Smedley has made significant contri-
butions to public safety in Canton. He is both
well-respected and well liked by his col-
leagues and, while he will be missed, we
wish him the best in his future endeavors,"
saidPublic SafetyDirector ToddMutchler.
Smedley and his wife, Lucie, have three
adult children, Ian, Alexandra and
Stephanie, and sons, Louis age 7, and Van
age 6.
