It was a solemn crowd that
gathered recently in Westland
City Hall to mark the dedication
of two memorial plaques for
deceased firefighters.
Mayor William R. Wild spoke
at the gathering of local officials,
firefighters, police officers, and
residents to dedicate the
plaques, one to memorialize
Todd Stanaway, a firefighter who
died of cancer in 2008 and the
other in memory of Brian
Woelke, the only Westland fire-
fighter to die in the line of duty.
Woelke died as firefighters bat-
tled a blaze at a city restaurant
on Ford Road, exactly two years
before the dedication. While his
death has been ruled a homicide
due to arson at the business,
there have been no arrests in the
incident.
Wild expressed his personal
sorrow at the deaths of the two
men and acknowledged their
heroism and courage. He said
the city recognizes the impact the
losses of both the men made on
the city and the Westland Fire
Department.
“These two men unselfishly
dedicated their lives to the fire-
fighting profession putting serv-
ice above self,” Wild told the
assembled crowd. “We express
our condolences to their families
for their significant loss and we
honor their memories today as
we dedicate these plaques to
Todd Stanaway and Brian
Woelke. Their service and com-
mitment will never be forgotten.”
Firefighters Union President
MitchTokarski sharedWild's sen-
timents.
“The firefighters and union
are pleased to donate the funds
needed for these plaques and
just as we were honored to work
with these two fine public ser-
vants, we are honored to recog-
nize them here today. Rest
assured the Westland Fire
Department will always be grate-
ful to have counted Todd and
Brian among our colleagues and
friends.
“We, too, wish their loved ones
all the best,” saidTokarski.
The plaques are on display at
WestlandCityHall.

City unveils memorials to fallen fire fighters
The last criminal charge fac-
ing Wayne City Council candi-
date Christopher Sanders, 46,
has been dismissed by Wayne
County Circuit Court Judge
AlexisGlendening.
“My confidence in the judicial
system has been rewarded,”
Sanders said. “I said from the
beginning of this nightmare that I
never did anything wrong. These
allegationswere patently false.”
Sanders initially faced a litany
of felony charges after a police
report was filed inWayne regard-
ing the 2013 HalloWayne
Pumpkin Carving Contest. The
reported winner of the contest,
Mike Spence, claimed that he did
not enter the contest and never
received the $1,000 cash prize.
The police report, based on
Spence's claims, alleged that
Sanders put the $1,000 prize in
his personal checking account
after signing Spence's name as
an endorsement. The contest was
sponsored by Destination Wayne
and the Wayne Chamber of
Commerce.
A series of text messages
between Spence and Sanders
appeared to completely exoner-
ate Sanders of all the claims
made in the police report and
contradict Spence's testimony in
the matter. The messages were
submitted to the prosecutors in
the case, Sanders explained, and
were proven legitimate.
“Once again, politically-moti-
vated gossip prompted this mali-
cious and unfounded prosecu-
tion,” Sanders said. “I am strong-
ly considering civil action against
the people who went on record
with these falsehoods, including
Nicole Vargas who filed this spu-
rious police report and Michael
Spence who perjured himself in
court.”
Five of the six charges in the
case were almost immediately
dismissed last year by Garden
City District Judge Richard
Hammer, Jr. who said that the
elements of proof had not been
met in the fraud charges.
Hammer did allow the charge of
identity theft related to the check
for the prizemoney to go forward
to circuit court.
Amistrial was declared on the
identity theft charge earlier this
year.
“This was another political
witch hunt and this has attempt-
ed to do irreparable damage to
my reputation,” Sanders said.
“People who know me stood by
me during this entire ordeal and
I will never forget the impor-
tance of their support, their
belief inme and their trust inme.
It meant more than I can say in
the face of this ordeal.
“They have helped strengthen
my resolve to continue to defend
myself against these nasty, gossip-
ing, unchristian bullies,” he
added.
Sanders recently announced
his candidacy for the Wayne City
Council in Ward One and will
face resident Alfred Brock, a
write-in candidate, for the seat.
Sanders was represented by
Canton Township attorney
RonaldRuark.
All charges dropped against Wayne candidate
Once again, politically-motivated gossip
prompted this malicious and unfounded prosecution.
