time, education, experience or
intelligence to manage for them-
selves. They need to know that
their priorities are the priorities of
those they elected to office.
We don't think that happens
when the State of whatever is pre-
sented in a room full of chamber of
commerce members, many of
whom funded the campaign of the
person giving the speech. We don't
think it happens in a room full of
political cronies and fellowmunic-
ipal employees, there to lend sup-
port to the speaker.
If political leaders want to let
people know about the State of …,
let them get on the local cable
channel and take live phoned-in
questions from the viewers. Let
them visit several well publicized
meetings at local senior citizens
centers, at VFW halls, at service
clubs where they legitimately and
truthfully answer questions posed
to them, no matter how mundane,
hownaïve or howuncomfortable.
We'd like to see area leaders
treat this spring message the way
they treated their campaigns for
office, when actually meeting the
voters and listening to what they
had to say seemed important.
We'd like them to be honest
about the problems that they all
face and about the painful solu-
tions and decisions that have to be
made.
Painting a rosy picture of the
future and of the progress and of
the terrific job being done is often
nomore than re-election campaign
rhetoric aimed at the select group
in the audience.
We think a sincere message, an
honest picture of the condition of
the community, and truthful
answers to citizens' questions
would be a far more effective use
ofmunicipal leaders' time.
