The athletic fields at
Romulus High School will see
some much-needed repairs
nextmonth.
Members of the Romulus
Community Schools Board of
Education approved a $12,000
contract with Turfix Synthetic
Sports Field Specialists to com-
plete the repairs during a four-
day period in April. The
expense was allocated from the
Wayne County Enhancement
Millage that was approved by
voters in 2016.
Superintendent of Schools
Marjie McAnally said she is
excited that students will be
able to participate in spring
sports with no disruption. She
added that athletics are vital in
the overall development of stu-
dent athletes and that sports
play a major role in the school
community.
The high school field is heav-
ily utilized and will allow
Romulus High School and
Romulus Middle School sports
to move forward in the short
term and also allow the three
teams from the Romulus Flyers
youth football program to con-
tinue touse the venue.
The facility is also used for
various community events and
the track at the field is also
open to the public for recre-
ational use.
School officials and board
members were forced to close
the athletic facility following
football season last year follow-
ing a failed safety inspection.
Voters rejected a 10-year, 3 mill
sinking fund millage last
November which would have
provided funding to address the
long-term solutions necessary
at the facility. That sinking fund
millage would have generated
an estimated $2.3 million annu-
ally at a cost of about $140 annu-
ally for each property owner. In
addition to funding repairs
bringing the athletic complex to
industry standards, renovations
across the district would have
been addressed with the sink-
ing fund dollars, school officials
said.
“There is a dire need to
improve our parking lots, roof-
ing, plumbing, doors, windows,
fire suppression systems, and
technology across the district.
Although the ballot proposal
fell short by 143 votes, I believe
that our community under-
stands the importance of a
strong school district and that
they will invest in Romulus
Community Schools in an
August election. Our main goal
is tomove Romulus Community
Schools forward in order to
serve our families for genera-
tions to come,” said Mark
Edwards, coordinator of school
relations.
Turfix proposed the best
value to temporarily extend the
life of the field which was con-
structed in 1999. Edwards said
the repairs will ensure that it is
safe and usable for up to two
years. The company will con-
duct GMAX testing , which is
fundamentally designed to war-
rant that a field is performing
the way it should with respect
to impact or shock absorption,
throughout the field. A large
portion of the repairs will
include fixing a sunken area
near the north end zone. The
process will include cutting
back the turf, filling it with a
stone mix, leveling it out, and
rolling it back before seaming it.
Other repairs will include
cleaning debris from the field,
rejuvenating matted fibers, lay-
ing a rubber infill, and seaming
any loose or additional tears in
the turf, Edwards said.
There is a dire need
to improve our parking lots,
roofing, plumbing, doors, windows,
fire suppression systems,
and technology across the district.

Smile andhelp change a life forever.
During Celebration of Smiles month,
professional photographer Susan
Richardson and Therese Antoneilli are
hosting Headshots for Humanity from 11
a.m. until 2 p.m. April 21 at Moving the
Mitten Real Estate Group. The headshots
are ideal for use in professional publica-
tions, Facebook pages, LinkedIn profiles
and announcements.
During the event, the professional
headshot photos will be offered for a $24
donation to Operation Smile, a group that
provides free surgeries to repair cleft lip,
cleft palate and other facial deformities
for children around the world, thanks to
thousands of volunteer doctors, nurses,
dentists and specialized health care pro-
fessionals. This nationwide fundraiser is
being conducted by members of the
Professional Photographers of America.
Every three minutes a child is born
somewhere in the world with a facial
deformity. One in 10 will not survive to see
their first birthday. Those who do often
live in isolation and pain. More than
100,000 children are born with a facial
deformity each year in the 26 Operation
Smile partner countries. Tens of thou-
sands remain untreated. It takes as little as
$240 to repair one smile and change a
child's life forever.
All registered participants will receive
a special gift upon arrival and be entered
into a free raffle for a prize basket. Two
professional makeup artists will be on
hand to help with last minute touch-ups
before the photo-shoot. Payments will be
processed on check-in including Visa,
Mastercard, Discover and American
Express along with personal or business
checks. No cashwill be accepted and iden-
tificationwill be requested.
Therewill be refreshments and a raffle.
Moving the Mitten Real Estate Group is
located at 337 Main St. in downtown
Belleville.
