Belleville Mayor Kerreen
Conley cast the lone no vote on a
proposed canoe/kayak rental
business planned for Horizon
Park.
The plan for the new rental
operation was presented to the
members of the city council by
the Belleville Downtown
Development Authority during a
regular meeting last week. The
business would be operated by
Motor City Canoe Rental and
would include a shed for the
boats and equipment located
next to the Veterans Memorial in
the park.
John Blevins of the rental
business suggested publicizing
the availability of the rentals
with vinyl signs on Belleville
Bridge but was told by both
Conley and members of the
council that no banners were
allowed on the county-owned
bridge. Conley told the crowd
that only special events have
been temporarily advertised
withbanners on the bridge.
“I would not be in favor of it,”
she said.
The current plan is to bring 12
rental watercraft, six canoes,
four kayaks and two paddle-
boards, to Horizon Park. Rentals
would be priced at $10 an hour
with a two-hour minimum. The
expected start date would be in
May with weekend rentals, mov-
ing to a seven-day operation
fromnoon until 6 or 8 p.m. week-
days and 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. on
weekends sometime in June.
Motor City Canoe Rental
would pay 5 or 10 percent of
gross rental fees to the city, based
on negotiations for the provision
of an equipment shed, expected
to cost about $3,500 to $4,000 to
build.
Conley said her vote was
based on the need for more
information about the availabili-
ty of rescue personnel and
equipment should one of the
rented watercraft run into diffi-
culties.
The issue is expected to be
discussed at a future meeting of
the city council.
Never underestimate the power of a
group of determinedwomen.
During the past four years, Giving
Hope, Women's Giving Circle, a fund of
the Canton Community Foundation, has
collected about $10,000 annually to
donate back to the community for proj-
ects that benefit women and children.
The group will again sponsor their
annual charity event from 6:30-9 p.m.
April 13 at Fox Hills Golf 7 Banquet
Center.
About 75 women comprise the donor-
advised Giving Circle, which provided
grants to address the needs of women
and families in the greater Canton and
Plymoutharea.
Chairperson of the event this year,
Betty Bloch, said she is pleased at the
participation and involvement of the
community with the Giving Hope pro-
gram.
"What started out four years ago as a
simple social event, wherewe could raise
a little money for a local cause, has
become a spectacular way to help local
women's and children's non-profits and
have a great girls' night out," Bloch said.
"This demonstrates the positive power
that occurs when a great group of women
comes together."
Last year, more than 200 women
attended the event which will include
food and a cash bar; shopping and a fash-
ion show featuring styles from local shops
and boutiques; a raffle and a variety of
silent auction items. The event fee is $35
and pre-registration is required at
.
Proceeds from the event will be used
to support the efforts of Saint Joseph
Mercy Health System in bringing the
ShapeDown program to the greater
Canton and Plymouth area. Past recipi-
ents of funding from the Giving Hope,
Women's Giving Circle have included
Plymouth-Canton Community Schools
Clothing Bank; several early childhood
programs and the purchase of children's
furniture for First Step Temporary
Emergency Housing for abused women
and children.
For more information or to register for
the event, visit the Giving Hope page at
or call Beth
Meade at (734) 495-1200.

A trip to Cabo San Lucas, a pair of dia-
mond earrings and airline tickets are among
the items the Canton Chamber of Commerce
will auction off during the 29th Annual
Auction.
The group has planned a rock 'n' roll
theme for the event which will take place
from6:30 p.m. until midnight Saturday, April
16 at Burton Manor in Livonia. The event
usually brings hundreds of people out to
help support the chamber and this year,
according to a spokesman, some will be
dressed as their favorite rock star.
The auction is the largest fundraiser of
the year for the group.
Tickets are $75 per person and include
an open bar, a strolling dinner, entertain-
ment and, of course, the auctions and raffles.
More information is available at (734) 453-
4040. Major sponsors of the event this year
are Jack Demmer Ford, Inc. and Beaumont
HealthcareCenter-Canton.
