Senior residents in Plymouth and Canton
have some help available as they face the
inevitable spring clean up of leaves and
debriswinter leaves behind.
The Plymouth Community United Way is
again organizing Rake-N-Go, a volunteer
effort that helps senior citizens and those
who are disabled in Plymouth and Canton
with spring leaf raking. This year, the service
day will be April 28 in Plymouth, Plymouth
Township andCanton.
Volunteers are still needed to clean yards
and do light outdoor chores, along with the

AnnArbor Trail, Suite 2 inPlymouth.
Serving the Plymouth and Canton com-
munity since 1944, the Plymouth Community
United Way addresses human service needs
for individuals and families.
Local Canton community members rallied
recently to officially launch the 2012 Relay For
Life season. Dozens of families, caregivers,
cancer survivors, schools, local organizations
and individuals attended the rally that provid-
ed information about how their involvement
benefits the American Cancer Society's goal to
save lives and create more birthdays. Money
raised will fight cancer by helping people stay
well and get well, by finding cures, andby fight-
ing back, a spokesman said.
The American Cancer Society Relay For
Life is an overnight community celebration
where individuals and teams camp out, picnic,
dance, play games and take turns circling
around a track "relay" style to raise funds and
fight cancer.
The event opens as cancer survivors lead
theway around the track and are honoredwith
the Survivor Lap. As the sun begins to set,
hundreds of luminaria light the field in an
emotional silent ceremony. Each bag lit is in
honor of a loved one who won the fight against
cancer or in remembrance of a special some-
onewho lost their battle.
Started in 1985, Relay For Life began with
one man who circled around a track for 24
hours raising $27,000. Relay For Life has
grown to more than 5,000 communities and
over 25 countriesworldwide.
