Improvements and renova-
tions to the Mike Modano Ice
Arena in Westland are officially
complete.
Last month, officials and
members of the public attended
a ribbon-cutting ceremony to cel-
ebrate more than $1.5 million in
improvements at the municipal
arena including four new mod-
ern locker rooms, a community
room, purified water fountains,
the re-purposing of original lock-
er rooms into coach/referee room
and a storage facility for an addi-
tional Zambonimachine.
Funding for more than
$1,528,000 in improvements dur-
ing the past eight years has come
from federal and state grants
along with more than $150,000
generated from Mayor William
Wild's annual charity hockey
game and contributions from the

Previously, new, energy effi-
cient compressors were installed
at the arena along with infrared
heaters above the bleachers. The
building features free WiFi and
has new LED lighting fixtures
and improved concession areas.
Recent improvements included
new flooring in the coach/referee
rooms along with new doors and

mitment of the city to the Mike

is an important asset in
Westland's Parks and Recreation
portfolio,” commented Wild. “It
provides a place for residents of
all ages to engage in fun, physical
activity year-round and these
improvements will serve its cur-
rent users and attract new cus-
tomers to the rink.”
Among the several residents and city officials who joined Mayor William Wild, center, at the official ribbon-
cutting of the improved Mike Modano Ice Rink were Westland Hockey Association President Tracey
Posey and Figure Skating Director Julie Marchand.
