More than 700 area students have
thanked the Canton Community
Foundation for helping them fund their
educational efforts.
The foundation has been awarding
scholarships to local students in Canton
and neighboring areas for more than 26
years. To date, the foundation has given
about $700,000 to students to help them
meet their goals.
Again this year, the foundation will pro-
vide funds to students including some new
scholarship categories. The Canton Police
Benevolence Fund is offering a scholar-
ship to students in Wayne County who
have participated in a police Explorer
program. The Plymouth Canton
Community Schools is also offering two
scholarships, one for pomp on partici-
pants and one for a student planning to
attend Washtenaw Community College in
the automotive andmotorcycle technology
program.
Applications for the scholarships are
available at
under the scholarship button on the left
side of the page. The application can be
completed and submitted online and will
register students for nearly all available
grants.
Deadline to apply is March 17 and suc-
cessful applicants will be notified of their
award in April and introduced at an offi-
cial ceremony inMay.

The Northville Educational
Foundation awarded 41 teachers
and 20 projects across the
Northville Public Schools district
with Innovative Grants totaling
$30,224, last year.
Forty-three applications were
received requesting more than
$90,000 in funding, according to a
foundation spokesperson. The
applications were reviewed by a
panel of seven judges and then
scored based on their innovation,
how they address curriculum
standards, their ability to be
replicated, the number of stu-
dents impacted and the goals for
the outcome of the project. The
top scores that fit within the
$30,000 budget allocated were
selected, she added.
The winners included
Forensic Science Kits to support
STEMcurriculumat bothmiddle
schools; Gel Electrophoresis kits
to support new biomed curricu-
lum at the high school; STEM
tool kits at Winchester and
Moraine; and unicycles at
Moraine which will help develop
balance, coordination and mus-
cles, all shown to correlate to
positive academic outcomes.
“The Northville Educational
Foundation truly appreciates
these teachers who are willing to
go above and beyond to bring
extra programming into their
classrooms so that their students
can better experience and
absorb what they are being
taught. Innovative Grants are an
opportunity for teachers to
experiment with how they teach
a lesson, but it's also an opportu-
nity for students to experiment
with how they learn,” noted a
prepared release from the foun-
dation office.
The 20 projects are already
being implemented in the class-
rooms and will impact nearly
4,000 students this year alone at
eight of the 10 Northville schools.
Many of them will be able to be
replicated year after year, the
statement continued.
This is the eighth year the
foundation has provided
Innovative Grants to teachers
across the district. A total of
$135,000 has been granted to
these innovative teachers since
the program began, according to
the statement.
The Big Bad Wolf and the
Wicked Witch will each stand
trial for their villainous actions
during the Spotlight Youth
Players production of
Fairy Tale
Courtroom
March 9-12 at The
VillageTheater at CherryHill.
The comedy, which will be
performed in the Biltmore
Studio, showcases the other side
of several familiar fairy tales
when both the Big BadWolf and
the Wicked Witch are brought to
trial. Both the Wolf and the
Witch have been frolicking from
fairy tale to fairy tale wreaking
havoc as they try to prevent the
general public from living hap-
pily ever after. Audiences will
hear the personal accounts of
what happened, told in testi-
monies
and
flashback
sequences, from characters
such as
Snow White, Dorothy,
Sleeping Beauty, the Three Pigs,
Little RedRidingHood
andmany
others, including the Witch and
the Wolf themselves, as each
trial unfolds.
Fairy Tale Courtroom
director
Anton Koyton got his start with
theater while attending college
at Eastern Michigan University
where he was part of a theater
troupe, CloseUp. He graduated
with a bachelor's degree in
Theater Arts. Since graduating
he has gone on to be part of pro-
ductions such as Chicago, The
King and I, Guys and Dolls, and
The Drowsy Chaperone. Koyton
has also directed two children's
shows with Spotlight Youth
Players: Harry's Hotter at
Twilight in 2014 and Winnie the
Pooh in 2016.
As a big fan of fairytales,
deciding to be the director of
this showwas a “no brainer” for
Koyton. He also loves to teach
kids theater basics.
“Many of the kids I have
directed in the past have only
done musicals or haven't done
theater at all. I want to teach
themsomething new in theater,”
Koyton said “How amazing it is
to see what these kids bring to
the table. Join us as we get jus-
tice for the Three Little Pigs,
Little Red Riding Hood, Snow
White, andmanymore.”
Assistant director Kayla
Thompson said she is excited to
be a part of her second Spotlight
Youth Players production and is
eager to be taking on a larger
role this year as producer. Last
spring she had the opportunity
to assistant direct Winnie the
Pooh. Thompson has been on
stage since a very young age, but
theater and acting came later
while she was in high school.
After taking a hiatus from the-
ater to attend college, she
moved to Michigan and said she
was excited to find so many dif-
ferent community theater com-
panies in the area.
“This show has a very funny
storyline. It is full of puns and
jokes that keep you on your toes
and laughing until you cry. Plus,
the audience gets to be the jury
which means there can be a dif-
ferent outcome for each show.
Two possible endings,” she said.
Tickets are priced at $16 for
adults, and $14 for seniors and
youths and can be purchased by
calling The Village Theater Box
Office at (734) 394-5300 or online
at
In addition, tickets can be pur-
chased at the box office, which
opens one hour prior to show
time.
