Scholarship deadline nears
Each year the Plymouth Rotary Club
awards scholarships to students who reside
in the Plymouth Canton school district.
This year, Rotary will award two scholar-
ships valued at $10,000 over a four-year
period as well as a number of additional
scholarships valued at approximately
$8,000.
Applications are available in the high
school counseling office or on line at

Historic calendars for sale
The 2017 Belleville Area Historical
Society calendar is now available and has
beendiscounted to $5.
The calendars can be purchased at sev-
eral tri-community locations including,
Belleville Area Museum, Belleville Area
Chamber of Commerce, Belleville CityHall,
Garden Fantasy on Main, Sumpter Ace
Hardware, Sumpter Township, and the Van
BurenTownshipHall Treasurer's office.

Citizens Academy enrollment open
Canton residents who want to learn
more about how their police department
works will have that opportunity during the
upcoming Citizens Police Academy in the
township.
Individuals who attend the academy will
have the opportunity to learn the policies
and operational procedures of the depart-
ment through presentations, demonstra-
tions andhands-on activities
This year, the Citizens Police Academy
will take place from 6-9 p.m. on Thursdays
for eight weeks beginning April 6 and con-
tinuing throughMay 25.
Class size is limited for this free pro-
gram. Applicants are limited to Canton
Township residents who are at least 21
years of age. Applicants must have no
felony convictions and no misdemeanor
convictions in the past three years,
Applicants will be subject to a background
check.

Art exhibit continues
The Northville Art House is presenting
the 11thAnnualMember Exhibition, featur-
ing original works in all mediums, includ-
ing painting, drawing, photography, sculp-
ture, jewelry, clay, and mixed media. The
exhibition showcases the talents of more
than 60member artists of theNorthville Art
House as well as recognizes the peoplewho
support the growth and creativity of the arts
in the community.

Legislator hosts coffee hours
State Rep. Kristy Pagan (D-Canton) will
host monthly coffee hours at 7 p.m. the
fourth Monday of the month at Panera
Bread, 41950 Ford Road in Canton

discuss their thoughts and ideas about how
she can best represent and address the

Patriotic volunteers sought
Plymouth Township officials are seeking
volunteers to lead the Pledge of Allegiance
at the start of the regular meetings on the
second and fourth Tuesdays of themonth at

Suggested qualifications include being
an active duty or retired military service-
man or woman, a member of a service or
Scouting organization, a retired first
responder, memer of a student government
organization or a patriotic citizen.

Grief programunder way
A grief-recovery seminar and support
group will meet at Romulus Wesleyan
Church in Romulus at 6 p.m. on Thursdays
through May 18. The church is located at

GriefShare features nationally recog-
nized experts on grief and recovery topics.
The 13 video sessions include “Effects of
Grief,” “When Your Spouse Dies,” “Your
Family and Grief,” “Stuck in Grief,” and
more. Attend any or all sessions. A $15 reg-
istration fee will include a workbook/jour-
nal andweekly handouts.

BelovedCommunity event planned
Beloved Community members will host
the Final Friday conversation l centered
around the Ava DuVernay film 13th at 6:30
p.m. Feb. 24 at Geneva Presbyterian
Church, 58345 North Sheldon Road in
Canton.
Members are asked to bring a dish to
pass.
The film is a documentary referring to
the 13th Amendment to the Constitution,
which reads “Neither slavery nor involun-
tary servitude, except as a punishment for
crime whereof the party shall have been
duly convicted, shall exist within theUnited
States...” The progression from that second
qualifying clause to the horrors of mass
criminalization and the American prison
industry is laid out byDuVernay.
Baked potatoes served
The Belleville Community Chorus
invites everyone to enjoy their 4th annual
Baked Potato Dinner from 4-7 p.m.
Saturday, Feb. 25, at Open Arms Lutheran

will enjoy a large baked potato with a
choice of toppings, plus a beverage and

Try hockey for free
Boys and girls ages 4 to 9 can receive
free hockey instruction from Gordon
Bowman and Plymouth Canton Hockey
Association coaches from 4-5 p.m. Saturday,
Feb. 25 at the Plymouth Cultural Center Ice
Arena.
The lessons are presented by the Detroit
Red Wings Foundation and Michigan
Amateur Hockey Association. No prior
hockey experience is needed although par-
ticipants
must
pre-register
at
Space is limited to
50 participants. Participants will be given a
jersey to keep provided by The Detroit Red
WingsFoundation.
A limited amount of equipment is avail-
able for use, but participants are urged to
bring their own skates if possible.

Winter market opens
The Canton Farmers Market will return
with special Winter Markets during three
Sundays in February, March and April at
the Summit on the Park community recre-
ation center. The Markets will take place
from10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Feb. 26, March 19, and
April 23, in the Banquet Lobby in the
Summit on the Park, located on 46000
Summit Parkway inCanton.
More than a dozen vendorswill be onsite
at theFeb. 26WinterMarket offering awide
assortment of Michigan grown and made
products, including: honey, jam, cider,
apples, artisan cheese and bread, baked
goods, farm eggs, seasonal produce grown
in greenhouses and hoop houses (weather
permitting) andmore. A local chef will host
a cooking demonstration from 10:30 a.m. -
noon with tasty bites for market-goers to
sample. Bridge Card and Double Up Food
Bucks transactionswill also be accepted.

Fat Tuesday buffet served
Belleville Rotary Club members are
organizing the annual club Fat Tuesday
Italian Buffet to benefit youth and tri-com-
munity projects.
The dinner is open to the public and is
planned for 4:30 until 7:30 p.m. Tuesday,
Feb. 28 at the Van Buren Eagles Hall, 9961
Beck Road in Van Buren Township. The
hall is west of Belleville Road and South of
TylerRoad.
Tickets for the buffet are $12 for adults
and $6 for children 12 and younger and are
available from any Rotary Club member or
at the door. The evening will also include
raffles and carry outs are available.
The menus will feature a variety of
favorite pastas and sauces along with other
Italian delights. Paczki and pop will be sold
separately.

Jazz @ The Elks happens from 7-9:30
p.m. the last Tuesday of the month There is
