Fire fighters are
honored by township
Goodfellows efforts pay off
Lt. Bruce VanGemert was awarded the
William g. Gage Memorial Award for Fire
Service Excellence during a Van Buren
Board of Trustees meeting earlier this
month.
Fire Chief Dan Besson presented the
award to Van Gemert along with awards to
several other firefighters in the Van Buren
department.
Besson congratulated Van Gemert and
told him, “Throughout the years, I have had
the pleasure of seeing you grow, bothperson-
ally and professionally, and I have no doubt
that you will serve our department with the
highest regard.”
The Gage family issued a formal state-
ment about the award which was created to
acknowledge firefighters who epitomize Mr.
Gage's character, service and dedication to
the community..
“The William G. Gage Award for Fire
Service Excellence is one of the greatest
recognitions of Bill's efforts that he could
have ever expected or dreamed.
Our family would like to thank the board
of trustees, the fire department and the Van
Buren Township community for this honor
in memory of his efforts. Bill would be so
excited when someone he trained or
coached thanked him for his help and sup-
port. These simple words of thank you did
not outweigh the times he held a life in his
hands at the scene of an accident or gave
comfort to someone in distress,” the state-
ment concluded.
In addition, Besson announced the pro-
motion of six firefighters to the new rank of
lieutenant, includingRyanMcCormick, Mike
Shores, Bruce VanGemert, John Henderson,
Cutis Lunsford andCharlesDewitt.
Besson said he was honored to announce
the promotions, “based on the experience
and duties these qualified individuals pos-
sess.”
On-call firefighters were also honored for
the number of runs they completed for the
department. John Hayden responded to 78
calls, David Brouillettte responded to 77
calls, VanGemert went on 76 calls and Mike
Shoreswas honored for 75 calls.
Besson also recognized new firefighters
who recently joined the department includ-
ing Tim Craiger, Nolan Kennedy, Dallas
Oleszkowicz andMikeVlademar.
The Romulus Goodfellows helped more
people than ever during the 2012 holiday
season, although they had to tap into their
budget reserves to do so.
“Everything went smoothly,” Romulus
Fire Chief David Allison told the Romulus
City Council at a recent meeting. “It was
probably one of the best years I've seen.”
The Goodfellows, with their annual goal
of 'No Child Without A Christmas,' helped
115 families this year, providing assistance
to a total of 398 people. Of those, 242 were
17 years old or younger, according to
Allison. The Goodfellows also put together
95 food boxes for senior citizens, which
were distributedby areaCubScouts.
The group generated almost $28,000 in
donations. Of that, about $7,600 came from
the annual holiday paper sales-despite a
decrease in traffic on the first Saturday of
December. Advertisements purchased for
that paper totaled about $7,120 and the
annual fundraiser tea, organized by
Allison'swife, Julie, brought in about $9,000.
TheGoodfellows spent about $38,500.
“We had some money left over from pre-
vious years and we decided, instead of
banking that, we'd put it to good use and
give it to people that needed it,” Allison
said.
Preserving the past
Bill Kren, president, Romulus Chamber of Commerce presents Patty Braden, the
director of the Romulus Library with a check for $250 to help support the newspaper
digitizing program. Braden said donations will enable a company to digitize the last 45
years of the Romulus Roman newspapers and make the information available to the
public For many years, the Roman has reported on the city and publishes the legal
advertisements from the City of Romulus. The digitizing project would cost an estimat-
ed $13,000. Braden has received a $4,000 donation to get the project off the ground
and “unofficial commitments” totaling $1,000, she said. Those interested in donating
to the effort can contact Braden at (734) 942-7589 or visit the library at 11121 Wayne
Road, next to Romulus City Hall. Library hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through
Thursday and noon to 5 p.m. Friday and Saturday.
