indoing that.
Many residents believe the

cared for.
Spring is coming and there is
plenty we need to accomplish. We
will be looking for volunteers to
help us rake leaves around the
fence, trim wild brush that is grow-

Miracle League needs volunteers
To the editor;
Spring is just around the corner
and so is our second season of
baseball at the Miracle League of
Plymouth, BilkieFamilyField.
Of course, without the help of
our special volunteers, the league
would not be able to run on its own.
This is where we need volunteers.
Please consider donating time to
be a "buddy" to one of our players,
coach a team, work in the conces-
sion stand or "ump" a game.
This year we will be using the
on-line volunteer website volun-
teerspot.com so that our helpers
can easily sign up for the days,
times and activities that they would
like to participate in. The site will
be accepting volunteers the begin-
ning of April.
Anyone interested in coaching a
team, please contact Shari Bilkie at
info@miracleleagueplymouth.org
as soon as possible. We need
approximately 16 coaches this sea-
son to lead our teams on to victory.
Although it is a time consuming
activity, it is definitely worth it. The
smiles on the children's faces as
they hit the ball, run the bases and
cross home plate are priceless.
Those who were volunteers last
year will need to register again this
year.
Thank you.

Use of funding questioned
To the editor:
On Feb. 8, the city council of the
City of Wayne approved unani-
mously (they all voted Yes) to
accept a Community Development
Block Grant Subrecipient
Agreement with Wayne County for
up to $300,000 for the purchase and
installation of a natural gas standby
generator system.
Apparently, this backup genera-
tor will be used at the Wayne
Community Center located on
HoweRoad.
These grants come from the
Federal Department of Housing
and
Urban
Development.
According to HUD, this is what
they should be used for: "Over a 1,
2, or 3-year period, as selected by
the grantee; not less than 70 per-
cent of CDBG funds must be used
for activities that benefit low and
moderate income persons. In addi-
tion, each activity must meet one of
the following national objectives
for the program: benefit low and
moderate-income persons, preven-
tion or elimination of slums or
blight, or address community
development needs having a par-
ticular urgency because existing
conditions pose a serious and
immediate threat to the health or
welfare of the community for
which other funding is not avail-
able."
It is difficult to track where this
money comes fromand it is becom-
ing equally difficult to track where
it is going. Can you understandwhy
a program intended to provide
money to addressing urgent condi-
tions posing a serious or immediate
threat to the health or welfare of a
community and intended to pre-
vent or eliminate slums or blight
would be used on a backup genera-
tor for an ice rink?
AlfredBrock,
Wayne
I admit, I am a little concerned
about a conflict between Faith and
Atayla. I mean, I was warned not to
deal with anyone other than Mr.
Okoros, so I hope I haven't spoiled
my chances at getting all this
money by being friendly and trying
to help her get her husband's
money out of the country.
She assures me there is nothing
illegal about this, but now I am get-
ting nervous. What if there are
laws against transferring thismuch
money? Maybe I should call some-
body.
Or maybe I should just wait and
see what happens when I don't
send either of my new best friends
themoney?
See, I'm running a little short of
funds since I got this email from
my husband's niece telling me she
was stranded in London and I
needed to immediately wire $1,000
to a post box number so she could
get home.
I sent themoney but as soon as I
have time, I am going to have some
words with her mother. Imagine
letting a 12-year-old travel abroad
onher own.
The wonders of modern tech-
nology, eh?
the business of the day. Top offi-
cials are doing the jobs of two staff
people along with their own and
their assistants have, in many
cases, been laid off or are also
doing thework of at least one other
person alongwith their own.
But in, say Canton Township or
Northville or Romulus, where the
financial pressures are certainly
present, we still find courtesy, a
spirit of service, an apparently sin-
cere desire to help citizens navi-
gate their way through whatever
the problem might be to a better
conclusion .
And so far, unlike many others,
none of themhave lied tous.
