2 teachers resign after test score investigation
Plans for new library location, features discussed
Two Northville teachers have
resigned following an investigation
by the district into unusually low
test scores of a group of students at
NorthvilleHighSchool.
Resignations from special edu-
cation teacher Lynn Traxler and
Jennifer Warnock were accepted
by a unanimous vote of the mem-
bers of the school board at a spe-
cial meeting early this month. The
resignations were part of an agree-
ment reached between the two
and district officials following an
investigation that began in
November. The teachers were
placed on paid administrative
leave when the probe into the
unusually low scores on the
Northwest Evaluation Association
adaptive online test began.
Reportedly, the students taking the
test were under the tutelage of
Traxler andWarnock.
School officials began the inves-
tigation when the students' scores
were notably lower than prior
results on the same test.
Superintendent of Schools
Mary Kay Gallagher explained
that students and parents affected
by the resignations would be noti-
fied of the decision of the board
and the plan to continue with
“guest teachers” while the district
posts the jobs and hires replace-
ments.
“Right now, we will continue to
communicate with parents so that
we put the focus on the kids and
learning in the classroom,” she
said.
Board members were assured
that the agreement with the two
teachers protected the district
fromfuture legal actionby the pair.
School board president Ken
Roth said at themeeting Jan. 2 that
a timely decision was needed on
thematter as the district enters the
secondhalf of the school year.
“We've received a great deal of
community input about the desire
to have closure and permanent
resolution, one way or the other, to
this issue, so this gives us the
opportunity to put a permanent
plan into place for the remainder
of the school year as quickly as
possible,”Roth said.
“The individual teachers chose
to resign, ultimately, that's there
choice and the district tonight is
accepting those resignations and is
moving forward on creating a sta-
ble environment in the class-
rooms,”Roth said.
Board members agreed to
begin the hiring process for
replacement teachers thismonth.
When the Friends of the
Belleville Area Library meet at 2
p.m. Jan. 25, architect Dan
Whisler will have a lot of informa-
tion for them
Whisler will present the latest
sketches, site plans and other
details of the proposed new plan
for the library building, to be
located on the site known as the
DNR/Spencer property, with
frontage on Belleville Road and
BellevilleLake in the rear.
At a recent meeting of the
Library Building Committee,
Whisler discussed the next steps
in the proposed construction,
including discussions with Van
Buren Township officials regard-
ing parking requirements, deten-
tionpond fencing and other items.
Whisler said he will also be
speaking with state Department
of Natural Resources representa-
tives regarding input on the
design of the new structure and
possible fishing along the cause-
way to the bridge. Whisler said he
is working on several individual
fishing areas.
He also said that he will be
speaking with Wayne County offi-
cials regarding curb cuts and
other requirements.
Whisler also said that he wants
to be sure that the needs of the
library staff are met and that
there is input from them regard-
ing the design and plan for the
building. To that end, Deputy
Library Director Mary Jo Suchy
will be meeting informally with
library staff to explain what is
planned and to hear ideas and
suggestions fromthe staff.
The biggest hurdle will be
preparing a budget and learning
how much financial support is
available from the communities
served by the facility. Whisler said
that he plans to have a list of
expenses, breaking out “must-do”
expenses from “might-do” items.
In addition to items such as sewer
lines, flood plains and parking,
questions arose regarding the
possibility of public art for the
facility.
He indicated that about 400
square feet of the new building
would be dedicated to local histo-
ry, with computer access for local
genealogists.
An entrance to the new build-
ing from the rear, off the lake was
also discussed at themeeting.
The preferred building design
has a 26,000-square-foot footprint
and 50,000 square feet of total
area on two floors.
