The docks at Horizon Park in Belleville
will soon be improved, hopefully funded by a
state grant.
The Downtown Development Authority
has urged the city to proceedwith an applica-
tion for a state grant from the Department of
Natural Resources to fund the improvements.
Plans under consideration include adding
a 160-foot dock to the existing fishing pier.
The dock would feature slips for docking
boats and an area to park jet skis. Included
would also be a launch area for canoes and
kayaks utilizing a slide to allow easier access
to the launch site.
A separate plan also being discussed
would add a covered roof to the dock and
fishing pier.
Both plans would be completed in four
phases.
Dock specifications and state rules are
being researched but the DDA members
urged the city council to complete the grant
application while the plan is being finalized.
The grant would require a resolution from
the city council agreeing to pay 25 percent of
the total amount inmatching funds.
A current estimate of the cost for dock
improvements is about $122,000. Officials said
there would be no action on the project prior
to a public hearing.

Van Buren Public Schools is now accept-
ing nominations for deserving graduates of
Belleville High School for the Distinguished
Graduates Hall of Fame. Enacted by the
Board of Education in 1998, the mission of
this program is to recognize honorable and
worthy graduates who have brought distinc-
tion to the community.
The programis now in its 16th year.
“We are looking for qualified nominees
who have graduated from Belleville High
School prior to 2002 and have distinguished
themselves by their contributions to their
chosen profession through outstanding indi-
vidual performance or leadership or recog-
nized success in a particular field of work
and /or their contributions or volunteer
leadership, time, effort and/or resources to
benefit the greater Belleville area or other
communities,” said Melissa Lloyd, assistant

The Romulus Public Library is seeking
donations that would enable a company to
digitize the last 45 years of the
Romulus
Roman
newspapers and make the informa-
tion available to the public.
Library Director Patty Braden said the
library collection includes Roman newspa-
pers dating back to 1967.
Susan Willett, publisher of Associated
Newspapers (which include theRoman), has
bound volumes of many of the newspapers,
but they are stored offsite and none of the
newspapers are digitized. Some editions suf-
fered water damage years ago from flooding
that occurred while firefighters were dous-
ing a fire that started next door and spread
to the newspaper office.
For many years, the Roman has been the
official newspaper of record for Romulus.
Besides reporting on the city, the newspaper
publishes the legal advertisements from the
City of Romulus.
The digitizing project would cost an esti-
mated $13,000, Braden said. She has
received a $4,000 donation to get the project
off the ground and "unofficial commitments"
totaling $1,000, but would need to raise
another $8,000 to allow the project to move
forward.
The company contracted to do the digitiz-
ing would provide the newspapers to the
library on a portable hard drive. Library
staff would provide information - text and
images - for public access.
"I think this is a worthwhile project that
will benefit the entire community," Braden
said.
Those interested in donating to the effort
can contact Library Director Patty Braden at
(734) 942-7589 or visit the library at 11121
Wayne Road, next to Romulus City Hall.
Library hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday
through Thursday and noon to 5 p.m. Friday
and Saturday. Sunday is the only day the
facility is closed.

and its programming, visit the website

Helping hands
Members of Boy Scout Troop 872 in Romulus donated food and toys to the Helping
Hand Thrift Store, which provides for the needy. Kneeling are Ben Mach (left), Bobby
Kerr, Scoutmaster Wayne Laginess, Ian Mach and Colton Laginess. Standing are
Assistant Scoutmaster Ken Beard (left), Kevin Beard, Helping Hand founder Florence
Klein, Dakota Watkins and charter organization representative Mark Lewkowicz. The
Scouts organized their annual Operation Can Do to collect non-perishable food in
November in Romulus neighborhoods. The toys were purchased after troop fund-rais-
ing efforts. The donation took place during the Scouts' Christmas party. Helping Hand
is located at 37510 Huron River Dr., just west of Five Points. The thrift shop is operated
by volunteers and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Tuesdays, Wednesdays
and Thursdays. Donations are welcome and encouraged.
Good credit
The holiday efforts of the Romulus Goodfellows were bolstered by a $300 donation by
Public Service Credit Union of Romulus. Credit union employees participated in a col-
lege jersey day before the University of Michigan-Michigan State football game. The U
of M team won and selected the Goodfellows as the recipient of this year's contribu-
tion. On hand for the ceremonial check presentation were Goodfellows Treasurer Lynn
Conway (left), Trustee Linda McNeil, President David Allison, credit union CFO and
Senior Vice President of Finance Susan Wyputa and credit union Market Research
Analyst Chris Smith. The Goodfellows provide food to needy Romulus families and
gifts to children at Christmas time.
