More than half of Romulus voters
turned out to cast their ballots on
Election Day to choose officials at the
local, state and federal level.
Romulus City Clerk Ellen Craig Bragg
said 11,121 people voted last Tuesday, or
about 57 percent of registered voters.
“Everyone came together to help us
out,” she said. “It was a very busy time.”
Buoyed by more than 5,500 straight
party ticket voters, Hillary Clinton easily
won in the city with about 7,500 votes,
good for about 68 percent of votes cast in
that race. Romulus voters also helped
return John Conyers (7,272 votes) and
ErikaGeiss (7,923) to office.
In the school board race, Danielle
Funderburg (4,849) retained her seat
while Robert McLachlan (4,067) and
Debi Pyles (3,999) won seats.
“I am humbled to have won the sup-
port of Romulus, Inkster, and Westland
voters to rejoin the Romulus Board of
Education,” McLachlan posted on
Facebook. “In the coming weeks and
months, youwill see the ideas that I have
for strengthening the position of our dis-
trict, both financially and froma curricu-
lar point of view. There will need to be
some courageous, challenging discus-
sions as we move forward, and I'm ready
to domy part.”
Craig Bragg said the heavy voter turn
out-particularly inprecincts that normal-
ly see a lot of voter activity-led to some
long lines. In traditionally busy
precincts, some voters had to wait more
than an hour to cast their ballots. She
said hoped to correct that issue in the
future.
“We are aware of some of those con-
cerns that voters had andwe don't take it
lightly for those wait times. We are
reassessing what went right, what went
wrong, what didn't work,” she said dur-
ing a regular meeting of the Romulus
CityCouncilmembers last week.
“We're working on correcting that so,
going forward, every voter will have a
positive experience,” she said.
